View Full Version : IE Displays only Source Code (W98)

Hi!
I was wondering if anyone could help me...I have a couple of computers networked (eventually successfully thanks to these forums!) but have a small problem on this one (W98SE).
A very few pages in IE are only ever displayed as source code. A recent example was from this evening when a guest tried to log into his hotmail account and the page after logging in was only in code. I have experienced this only a couple of times but always on 'secure' pages. I view lots of other 'secure' pages with no problems.
I am running Zone Alarm Pro and a ZAP enabled router with IE6 SP1. The problem appeared well before the network and firewall were installed, as for the software I honestly couldn't say!
It's not a life threatening problem as I have another computer to use (XP PRO) but embaressing when stuff doesn't work!
Any help would be kindly appreciated.

PS. Don't think me rude but I only really have time (due to work commitments) to read these forums on Sat. and Sun. mornings (early) so if you ask me a question it might be a few days until I get chance to answer

Baldrick2,

Regarding:
"Don't think me rude but I only really have time (due to work commitments) to read these forums on Sat. and Sun. mornings (early) so if you ask me a question it might be a few days until I get chance to answer."

Click on edit your profile.
Choose Email Notification.
Click in the Yes radio button next to:
"Do you want all replies to posts that you make emailed to you?"

That way you will be notified of any replies as they arrive. As for the balance of your question, I'll have to leave it for the more learned members.

one reccommended security option is to do with file associations for scripts. eg instead of wscript or javascript etc opening with the usual you change it to notepad or whatever, then if something tries to run you find out.

Hiya Folks

Thanks Nana for that, but just to make a liar out of myself it's now only Monday!!

I've just re-read my post and I really forgot in the heat of the moment to mention one last thing.

When I have experienced this problem in the past (disregarding the Hotmail pages which I don't use) the problem has usually 'gone away' after a period of time.

To describe it better it's almost as if IE has missed the coding in the web page which makes it display as a user friendly 'normal' web page-almost like the switch isn't being switched!

Hitting refresh doesn't solve the problem. Seemingly only waiting a few hours or so.

As I said previously this isn't that important but I really am curious as to why this happens

Thanks all in advance

Baldrick

Baldrick2,

You're welcome for the information.
Sorry, I'm unable to assist you with your problem, but I do have one question (no answers) about it, though.

Did this start happening after you upgraded to IE6 SP1? I've been having the ****ens of a time accessing secure sites since I did. Not a code probelm, they just take a l-o-n-g t-i-m-e to connect. It takes about 500 (yes, five hundred) times as long to get to a secure site as it does to a "normal" one.

Take care,

Hmmm...

Difficult to answer that one Nana, a lot of things happened at once.

Got Broadband, installed a router and NIC and downloaded (just because I could!!) the most enormous files you can imagine!!

I'm guessing that this probably did start after I installed the service pack. I've had a couple of other problems as well, one of the most annoying being in Outlook Express when writing an e-mail-hitting backspace to delete a blank space line caused the program to crash and (obviously) lose the e-mail. I fixed this by replacing the offending file (can't remember but something like MSHTMLED.dll with one from my XP comp.....works a beaut now!!

Since posting my question the problem hasn't arisen again...so I haven't been able to save the coding in notepad and run it.

I reckon it must be just a freaky glitch.

Thanks anyway

You all still sorted out my network!!

Jason,

Thank you for the information. I'm planning to do a clean install of XP soon (honest, everybody!) and will obviously be reinstalling IE6 - without SP1. It will be interesting to see if that puts things back to what they were. I know I'll have to reinstall SP1, but at least I can see if it's the culprit.
