If anyone knows how to completely disable Internet Explorer's pop up windows. I know of several PopUp programs, some of which are free, but would like to know if a setting exists within XP or IE that allows for the disabling of the popup feature. If anyone knows of such a trick...I'd sure appreciate the help. Thanks as always!
Respectfully,
SmartWebAgentMobile@Hotmail.com
No such setting that I'm aware of.

I concur with adg on there probably not being a setting to disable IE pop up's.
I've tried a number of pop up killer programs and found them annoying and a pain in the six ... until I discovered <a target="_blank" href=http://www.hdsoft.com/?0.1> PopNot 2</a>. Once it is configured to your liking it is totally passive and no more pop up's.
It's shareware and after the trial period the license is $19.95US.

the oxen are slow ...
but the earth is patient
Sometimes a pop up window is required, IE doesn't have any killing capabilities

you can always disable active scripting, but then all search and log on functions on sites will also be diabled. TO get round this use trusted sites, thats if you only use a few sites for this function. Be sure to wildcard those sites you want trusted.
That was my 100th post

Your hosts file is an excellent pop up killer, and it's free!
Check out this website for instructions on how to edit your HOSTS file. They give you a good list get you started, and you can always add to it.
Happy surfing!

This is a very elegant, transparent way to do it...still left with the windows, but not with the content...easy to close.
Anyone know the IP address to Kazaa's ads? is it different than the rest of Kazaa?

Actually, they never get the chance to "pop up", so you don't have to close them.....
If you find an add you want to block, just "right click" on it and view the properties.......get the domain name and add it to the list.
Of course, if the add originates at the same server which happens to be hosting the page you are viewing, then this obvoisly won't work. As you would be blocking the entire website.
However, in most cases, I think you'll find the bulk of annoying pop-ups come from a different server.
Give it a try!

nice one. I hadn't thought of using the Hosts file to swat popups. the only drawback is doing it manually, and if they change the adress of their popups

There's a freeware program called Surf in Peace that I highly recommend.

This from pcworld.co.nz
"...XP - Burst balloon announcements: One of the most irritating innovations of Windows XP is the plethora of pop-up messages, from Passport promos to warnings scolding about your hard-disk space.'
'Though Windows itself does not feature an off switch for these bothersome balloons, you can puncture them with the Microsoft utility Tweak UI, part of the free PowerToys for Windows XP. Both of these programs are on the Dec/Jan free CD. (edit - NZ only i presume).'
' You don't need to install all of the PowerToys unless you want to. Use the Custom setup option to install only Tweak UI. Follow the instructions in the setup wizard until the process is complete.'
' Once it is installed, choose Start•All Programs•Powertoys for Windows XP•TweakUI for Windows XP. Then click Taskbar in the left panel. On the right, uncheck Enable balloon tips and click OK..."
=============================================
* Here's the link to download TweakUI for WinXP from Microsoft:

When I get a popup, I let it load, right click it, select properties, then copy the url. Then I open Tools>Internet Options>Security>Restricted Sites, then paste the url in the dialog box and click Add. This seems to kill a lot of them.

If you are looking for a great pop-up killer then I really suggest that you get the program called STOPZilla. It is a shareware program but there is a crack for it. Just goto www.google.com and then type in the following below:
+Crack "STOPZilla crack" and then push enter and you should get a screen full of good pop up crackers for that program. I am telling you, this program actually works! It has blocked over 30,000 pop-ups just about and it is just worth it. Well if you would like more information about STOPZilla send me an E-mail at FortnerA87@hotmail.com and please visit my website at http://www.geocities.com/fortnera87/index.html
Please if you have a response to my question or whatever just email me at FortnerA87@hotmail.com

As seen in previous posts, you cannot completely disable IEs popups.
Seeding your hosts file with know adservers is probably your best bet if $$ is your concern. There is also a very handy freeware tool called WWWNuker that you can use to automatically add servers to your hosts file with.
To use:
When a pop-up opens, simply right-click on the page/graphic and select 'Z Webnuke'...this will bring up the originating server(s) for the page/graphic(s), and allow you to select what gets popped into your hosts file as a 127.0.0.1
Unfortunately, it doesn't quite work with flash graphics yet...but a very handy and free tool nonetheless

well for the most part. i don't use a pop up blocker i use a web filtering program i am sure there are freeware or sharware ones out there they allow you to disable onload or on exit commands in the html site allow only one playing of animation and so forth
A funny thing.
A few months ago we were installing a custom VB6 application and it broke the pop-up capability of IExplore. Apparently the OLE-Open command was broken, so you couldnt even do an "open in another window". The affected machines had to be re-imaged to fix it.

wow you all making it more diffacult than it really has to be.
this can work in windows 9x all the way through xp.
create a ram drive in dos for win 9x. say about 5 megs, load into windows goto internet properties and goto temporary internet files and tell windows to move it to the ram drive. in windows xp the ram drive and yes there are freeware ones out there. you tell the internet explorer the same thing move it to the ram drive. when you shut down and reboot all internet explorer data including cookies trash and dat file are lost on every reboot. in addition you can also tell both windows types to move the cookies folder and the history folder to the ram drive and the same effect is achieved on each reboot. all temporary data is lost.... no cleaning needed......
