Unable to access Secure Web pages
I have to use an old Netscape version to access the bank.
I even had to use it to create this WinGuides profile.

I have tried: (all unsuccessfully)
Add/Remove Programs, restore IE to previous version (that was 5.0)
didn't work, so upgraded THAT to 5.5 SP2 didn't work
fiddled with security cookies, etc. didn't work
Upgraded back to IE6 still doesn't work even after setting security levels to default or low
(Tools, Privacy & Tools Security)
I do not have any kind of firewall software running.
The particulars:
IE 6.0 6.0.28800.1106 128-bit SP1
Windows 98 2nd ed 4.10.2222A

Have 2 network cards 1 goes to cable modem other goes to hub.
Using win98 Internet Connection Sharing.
Another computer attached to same hub DOES allow secure web pages.
It has ie 6 sp1.
I guess it's OK, I can use Netscape, but it's just annoying that I can't figure it out.
Anyone have any ideas??

Wisinc,

First of all, I apologize for not being able to help you. I have one question, though. Have you tried waiting a really long time for a secure site to connect? Or, do you get the warning before you have a chance to wait?

Now I want to add my own complaint with a very similar problem. My trouble started around the same time that I upgraded my WinMe system to IE6's SP1. Because of that, I think that SP1 is at the root of the problem. Now it takes f-o-r-e-v-e-r to get on a Secure Website.

For example, my Hotmail home page takes over 8 minutes to connect now. It used to take less than 3 seconds! As this was my initial experience with the slowdown, the first thing I did was contact Hotmail. Surprise! It couldn't possibly be their fault.
Then I discovered that Hotmail was just a drop in the bucket of secure website connections.

Next I called my Cable ISP who had the same answer - not their fault. But, the technician I spoke with there told me she was having the same trouble on her home computer.

There is one additional new & peculiar thing happening on my stand alone home computer. When I'm connected to the web, the far right corner of the status bar usually shows the Internet icon showing a globe with the word Internet to the right of it. Since the upgrade, as soon as I'm on any secure website, the right corner of the status bar changes to the Intranet icon showing a globe in the background with two monitors in the foreground. It says Intranet to the right with this icon. When I leave the secure site, it immediately goes back to the Internet globe & writing.

One thing I have not tried is uninstalling/reinstalling IE6 without SP1. My Add/Remove applet doesn't offer me a choice of uninstalling SP1 on its own, so I guess I have to uninstall both of them and reinstall IE6 on its own.

I'm open to any & all suggestions. Thank you.

I don't think it is SP1 DIRECTLY.
I'm thinking that some combination of the security patches contained in other updates, along with ie 6 SP1 is the key to the problem.
Nana: Have you used this site/service to update other microsoft products - Outlook, Critical Security, Me etc?

It is interesting that the 2nd computer at my house is running 6SP1 and works with secure sites.
What is different is that the one that doesn't work has ALL (ok - most) updates suggested by the windows update site installed:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en

And no - I cannot wait, becasue there is no wait - it (the browser error) is immediate.

I'm sure it's Bill's FAULT, I'm just not sure where.

Wisinc,

Yes, I use Windows Update to update WinMe and IE - starting with IE5.5 and now IE6. I think most suggested updates are installed. I know all critical updates are.

Secure sites worked fine when I first upgraded to IE6. It was after I added SP1 that I started having problems.

Take care,
