Need some help (WXP)

I have some problem installing programs under win XP pro.when I use the setup file to install a program ,it won't start.I have tried to chenge the compatibility to other OS, but it does not help.But when I switch to win 98, I can install them without any problem.It happens very often.Can somebody tell me what is going on and how I can solve this problem ?Thanks

They are mostly shareware programs.The last program I tried to install was adobe acrebat reader 5.When I push the setup file , I see that the hard drive starts working , but then nothing happens and I have to shut down the setup trough CTRL+ALT+DEL.....
