When I initially start the Window Explorer, it displays 'detecting proxy setting' message and it takes upto 45 seconds for the Explorer to connect to the internet. Also, once all the open Explorer windows are closed, and if I try to reopen it again the Explorer does not connect to the internet. It asks me whether to 'work offline' or 'try again'. The 'try again' button is useless, and I have to reboot the computer in order to use the Explorer again. I am using DSL connection to the internet. Can anyone help? Thanks.

A short answer it to go to Tools > Internet Options... > Connections tab > Lan settings button and uncheck the box that says "automaticaly detect settings" at the top.
This may or may not solve the problem. We really need some more info.
Is there in fact a proxy between you and the DSL modem? Are you on a LAN?
Are you using DHCP, where you have to connect to the DSL to use it, or are you using a static IP, where you are given settings by the ISP to put in your computer (IP, Gateway, and DNS settings) computer connnects when you logon to the computer?

Do you use any software to authenticate when establishing a DSL connection? If so, what is the name of the program?
What is the version of IE?

Thanks Josh. That solved it. I have no idea when or how that box had been checked... Again, thanks very much.
