To stop XP from displaying the time on the desktop in the
notification area, perform the following steps:
1. Start a registry editor (e.g., regedit.exe).
2. Navigate to the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer
registry subkey to hide the time for the current user or to the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\policies\Explorer
registry subkey to hide the time for all users.
3. From the Edit menu, select New, DWORD Value.
4. Enter the name HideClock, then press Enter.
5. Double-click the new value, set it to 1, then click OK.
6. Close the registry editor.
7. Log off or restart the machine for the change to take effect.

Actually you need creat a new Key named "Explorer" and then new the DWORD under the key. By default, there is no such a Key "Explorer" under policies.

Test successfully.

Thanks for highlighting that. On my system there is an explorer key under policies so I assumed it was the same for all.

Oh really? Here I tested 10 systems without this Key, but I believe it should be there. Have no idea, maybe it is related to the OEM XP...

Thanks Dan,

Looks like it may be a difference between the retail and OEM version of XP Pro. I'm using the retail version.

The Key "Explorer" only exists under HKCU but not HKLM. So if you wanno hide the time for all user, you need create it. Need your confirmation.

Cruisor,

Thanks for pursuing this and clarifying the difference between HKCU and HKLM. I just checked my system and the key needs to be created in HKLM. I verified that it does hide the clock for all users.
