View Full Version : What exactly does "Received - Errors" mean (Win2K)

Okay, here I'm concerned with a 56K modem connection, using Internet Explorer 5.5 as the browser.

Im wanting to ask about that little window that comes up when you double-click on the double-screen icon in the Systray. For instance, when you want to quit the session.

It gives you "Bytes - Sent", "Received - Errors", etc.

For every session on the Internet, I get quite a lot of received errors, ranging from about 5 to as much as 80 sometimes.

What do these errors mean? Do they represent signalling errors (and hence retransmissions) on the cable between my PC and the server, or do they represent instead errors caused by my switching in and out of webpages and the like (the latter perhaps being 'normal' errors)?

My nominal 56K connection gives me only 38K bits/sec, at best. My kit, as far as the street, checks out A1. The theoretical maximum is around 47K bits/sec, I gather, so I'm wondering if my slow speed is due perhaps to crummy cabling between my PC and the exchange.

Does anyone have in-depth knowledge of what "Received - Errors" in that window really means?
