Hello all:
Joined the forum recently, was working on deletion of temp, TIF files with much help from folks here. Did not make any adjustments yesterday and woke to see no VShield in taskbar, new messages in Outlook Express, one called "end footer" with attachment and a numeric-letter address?. Didn't touch anything, restarted. Still no VShield. Checked run>msconfig and all 5 or so McAfee entries on startup list are gone.
VirusScan was not operational anyway, I'd just discovered, was trying to fix other things (had deleted some stuff in the First Aid component via its Autofix and wished to find out if I should Undo all before getting McAfee out and getting a Norton SystemWorks in. Some elf has apparently taken care of this, my own fault. Unfortunately I have to run to work right now, but wanted to get this out there, hope it's still here later!

Janann maybe this could be your golden opportunity to completely fix your computer up & rid it of the virus it has, just think you'd have notepad back & lots more.
How you might ask, Format & start from scratch with a clean install, I heard you say about some techie friends, so between them & this forum at winguides you should be in the pink again. . . But getting an Anti Virus is high on the list of must do's
Think about it, Ive started from scratch after a bunch of troubles before & it was good to have a propper operating system again. My nieghbour got his computer formated & they put win98 (nothing else) in for him $ 40.oo so thats always plan B until you get more knowledge
Bye 4 Now

Oh, thank you, Hally!, very uplifting to see your messages - you make even the worst computer predicament seem fixable. Here I was worried about getting my feet wet a few days ago and now it's jump in and swim or sink...
It does have its positive side, as you say, a fresh start would take care of a lot of things (some you don't know about, some I'm sure I don't even know about)! I wasn't sure what it was even called, but will take my cue from you and search for "clean install" tomorrow if I can still get connected.
Have the HP Pavilion system recovery and app. disks and I'm pretty sure I may need some neighbourhood help here, but I'd like to read about it a bit if I can. Guess these are just emerg. disks, but hoping they provide everything needed to start. Thanks for the virus scan link, hopefully in a year I'll be proficient enough to renew the Virus scan subscription that way, but decided to go get a Norton SystemWorks 2003, as it seems to have a Utility and CleanSweep or something like that. Your very reassuring message couldn't have come at a better time - thanks, mate, eh? (a little Australian/Canadian saying, ha ha)

Viruses don't just happen, either. Take a trip over here (http://www.vmyths.com/><font) and read about safe computing practices from a guy who doesn't even use AV software.

Something to read this is not very long, but its straight forward & a valuable read for someone about to start from scratch again like you (maybe) Clean Install Windows
