I guess everyone knows that having a password for Windows 98
does not prevent someone from accessing your desktop. All he
or she needs to do is cancel or esc at the point where the
box for password appears, and bingo they are at desktop.
Well I may have stumble on a solution. All one needs
to do is goto ControlPannel\Users and start a new user
bearing the same name as yourself ie name you used when
installing Windows 98.
This works for me and will probably work for you too.
Now no one can access my computer without the correct
password.
Cheers.

I haven't tried this but evidently password protection can be circumvented by using a floppy boot disc to boot into DOS and accessing/copying files from there, even in WinXP, but only if it is installed on a FAT32 drive. If it is installed on a NTFS drive DOS simply won't see the drive.

Not true now about not being able to lock up Win98.
Using Esc the password can be bypassed.
Not sure exactly what happenned.
There you do, I understand that Windows can be finicky sometimes.
Cheers and take care.

Simon, would you lock this thread? Keeps showing as new but last post to it was a year ago. Thanks.
