Hello,
I am rebuilding my computer, and I was wondering if anybody knew how to change where my programs are saved by default.
Thx

With most programs you can do a 'Custom' install and specifiy the drive/partition. MS Office will almost cooperate, still puts 1/3rd to 2/3rds on the boot/Windows drive, due to some shared features.

Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement

I realize that, but still my little bro uses the computer and installs random things on my boot drive. I have a partion on it so i can keep my info on my second drive, and i forgot the way to change it where it installs all programs to the standard location (exp c:\program files could be d:\install)

If you open up your Registry Editor and do a search for these two words:-
ProgramFilesDir
CommonFilesDir

And alter the path of both, upon re-boot the default path will be where you have chosen.

Be aware there are more than one of each word, so change them all.

I'm a newbie, take it easy on me

Go to the following key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion

and change the path for ProgramFilesDir.

On Win2K pro, this tweak works for me, and all installations goes directly to the folder I've selected ( instead of C:\ProgramFiles )
