Whenever I click a link to a .doc or .xls file, it opens word or excel, within IE. Is there any way I can get it to open a new instance of word or excel instead? (not just a new instance of IE with word/excel running inside)?

Hi,

Just to give some sort of response...I don't think this can be done with the standard setup of IE. The person who writes the code for the web page would need to write some extra code for the other applications to launch. I do not know how successfult this would be as people you different versions of office and have them installed in different locations.

Perhaps someone else know better...

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, but I think I've figured it out (at least in WinXP):
- In Windows Explorer, goto TOOLS -> FOLDER OPTIONS
- Choose the FILE TYPES tag
- Scroll down to DOC or XLS (depending on which program you want to open out of IE)
- Choose the ADVANCED button
- Clear the BROWSE IN SAME WINDOWS checkbox

Now it'll fire up a seperate instance of word/excel instead of spawning one inside IE

Thanks for your help anyway... took me ages of trawling through settings to find that one!
