Hello,

I am a complete novice terrified to touch anything on the computer, while my partner downloads games with reckless abandon. Neither of us knows anything about comp. maintenance - a bad combination! We had a McAfee virus scan installed 2 years ago, V Shield worked so we assumed all was well. Recent problems led to me trying to educate myself -a little late! - on what to do.

I found the McAfee First Aid component and fixed one critical problem, but I'm left with a list of potential problems. I've already deleted some things via First Aid because it has an Undo feature, but still have some "applications, OLE files and DLL files that the Registry expects to find are missing". I"ll ask about those elsewhere in this forum, but if I can't find out for sure, I'd better undo everything I've deleted, remove the McAfee, and would like to get a Norton AV. Can anyone recommend any specific Norton AV programs that contain a First Aid component similar to this one? I have heard of one Norton package that contains an AV, Utilities, and something else, but have forgotten what it's called. The Norton site kept leading me to their blurb on the 2003 AV. Thanks for any advice on this - it's great to be able to ask specific questions, as reading manuals and visiting countless websites is not getting me very far.

The software you are talking about is Norton SystemWorks 2003. It contains AV, utilisite and much much more. getting it is probably a good idea.

Hello, Ant. C.:

Thanks for identifying this package for me. I seem to have a lot of work to do trying to tune up this computer even before getting rid of McAfee and getting the Norton, but very much like the idea of the extras, aside from the virus protection. Anything that'll help me with preventative maintenance may forestall problems like the ones I'm muddling through now.

Janann,

When you had McAfee did you regularly update your virus definitions?
I have two friends that got caught napping. They both had good AV software but neglected to keep it updated. You guessed it, both of them got infected!

Moral of the story? AV protection is only as good as it's human operator.

Hi, Nana:

Moral of the story?....Ain't that true!

I purchased the McAfee a bit over a year ago and handed it over to be installed. I saw the VShield and was pleased. When I did see something about updates, thought they were a nice option, like new versions of device drivers and such... I really was a reluctant computer convert. Well, the clean install(?) will certainly be a quick - if painful - solution for the many problems plaguing this poor mistreated machine..then I can learn at a more leisurely pace. See you after the surgery!

Thanks, Dan.

It's true, though, isn't it? Lots of people install some brand of AV sortware and figure they are invulnerable until the next version comes out a year later. No fuss, no muss, no upkeep. No brainer!

Janann,

I hope the surgery is over and the patient pulled through unscathed.
