Hello:
How would I reinstall Win98SE to my FIRST hard drive (which does NOT contain the Win98SE CAB files) from the Win98SE "CAB files" located on a SECOND hard disk I am about to add to my system?

I want to add this SECOND hard disk (containing the Win98SE operating system and Win98SE CAB files on it) to my Win98SE computer . . . making it the D: drive (SLAVE).

I then want to FORMAT my FIRST hard disk (C: drive) and then reinstall the Win98SE operating system from the Win98SE CAB files located on the SECOND hard disk . . . since I do not have a Win98SE CD.

Then I want to COPY all these CAB files (and any other files that were used to install the Win98SE operating system to my FIRST drive) and totally CLEAN out this SECOND hard drive ( D: ) . . . which I guess I would need to FORMAT.

Which files are needed for a reinstall (other than the CAB files)?

What should my "Startup BOOT DISK" contain in order to do this (other than the files FORMAT and FDISK)?

Would anyone like to tell me the EXACT steps I need to take in order to achieve this goal?

I realize that I must first discover the "PRODUCT KEY" for the Win98SE operating system that is on this SECOND hard drive . . . before removing it from this SECOND computer and installing it into my FIRST computer.

Thank you . . . to anyone who will attempt to guide me through this process . . . or can guide me to any information on how to do all this.

If you have all these and boot from a bootfloppy you would just cd to the directory where they are located and run setup.

DRAMO4298,

If you don't have a startup disk already, you can download one from BootDisk.com.
While you're there, have a look at some of the other sites he has to offer. It's a real learning experience.

Here's where you will find your Product Key for Win98.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion

In the right hand pane, look beside Product Key. It's 25 alpha numeric digits.

Hope that helps.

I would like to know if I can re-install W98SE from CAB files, in the same disk. I have a boot disk yet, but I dont know how to do that. If this its possible, of course.
Thanks

Once located the directory containing the CABs files in the other disk, found the installation key and a boot disk already created, boot with this. At the A:\ prompt: format yor C: drive format C: /s, copy the directory containing the Cab files to the C: disk xcopy D:\wherever_the_CABs_are C:\WIN98 /s<-this copies all subfolders, change to C: and then to the new directory cd WIN98 type setup, follow the wizard...

It has been my experience that ALL the subfolders and files in the Win98 folder have to be copied to a hard drive.

The other subfolders, OLS and TOUR, and their files, are used during setup and if the Win98 folder is not complete, I've had the install fail.

Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement
