I need help with a couple of issues.
First, how can I re-enable hibernate? I unintentionally answeren yes when asked: "Your computer stopped responding the last few times it went into hibernation. Would you like to prevent windows from going into hibernation in the future?"
Second, no matter what I do I can not get System Restore to restore my computer to any previous state. I have disabled all backround applications but nothing seems to work.
Can anyone help?
nectarios,
For hibernate:
Go to Control Panel, Power Options, Hibernate Tab.
Put a check mark in the box next to "Enable Hibernate Support".

Go to Control Panel>System>Performance tab.
Click on File System button. Go to the Troubleshooting tab. Make sure "disable System Restore" box is NOT checked. Also, on the File System screen, check on the "Hard Disk" tab to make sure the "System Restore disk space use" slider is set to enough capacity to restore your entire system.
Hope this is of some help

The hibernate tab has dissapeared from the power options settings in control panel. Is there maybe another way to re-enable hibernate either through the WME system disk or elsewere?
The hibernate tab may disappear from the Power Options Properties dialog box if the computer does not resume from hibernation successfully or if you install new hardware that does not support hibernation.
As far as i can gather, windows won't let you enable it again as its been causing your computer problems
nectarios,
Sorry, I don't know of any other way to enable hibernate.
Here is a quote taken from the Help section of WinMe:
<font color=blue>"By default, your computer will automatically hibernate if the computer manufacturer designed your computer to be able to hibernate. You can determine whether your computer can hibernate by clicking Start, pointing to Settings, clicking Control Panel, and then double-clicking Power Options. If there is a Hibernate tab in the Power Options Properties dialog box, hibernate is available. If hibernation is turned on, it is also listed in the Shut Down Windows dialog box. Some computer manufacturers provide a check box to enable hibernation instead of a Hibernate tab.
If the tab is available, you can manually or automatically put your computer into hibernation.
The Hibernate tab may disappear from the Power Options Properties dialog box if the computer does not resume from hibernation or if you install new hardware that does not support hibernation."</font color=blue>

nectarios,
If you need further assistance with your hibernate problem, you could try this web based newsgroup:

Thanks Nana,
That resource helped solved the problem. Now if only finding out why system restore is not able to restore my computer to a previous restore point was that easy!
Nectarios
Nectarios,
I'm happy we got half of your problem solved, anyway. Sorry, I don't know what to do about your System Restore troubles.
Keep checking back here as the others are far more experienced than I and may be able to help you. Also, this a holiday weekend in both Canada (Thanksgiving) and the US (Columbus Day), so you may not get too many responses until Tuesday.

Whats the problem your having with system restore?

After system restore goes through it's routine, it restarts my computer and says that it couldn't restore to the date specified. This happens no matter what restore point I choose. I've tried selective startup disabling all the backround applications on startup, safe mode, nothing seems to work. There is enough space reserved for system restore because the setting for disk space use in file system properties is set to maximum. I've also uninstalled Norton Internet security and NAV to see if that is the problem but it isn't.
Any suggestions?
Nectarios.

Hi Nectarios,
I've been having the same problem for the last 6 months. Every attempt failed.
How much space have you allotted for System Restore?
I allotted all that it would allow, but I think what happened is that after 2 years of saving all the restore points, it finally used up all of it's room.
So what I did was turn it off, restart the computer, then turn it back on again.
You loose all your previous Restore Points, but I figured what do I have to lose, it wasn't working anyway.
That way you can start fresh again & if any new problems come up you will be able to run it again.
If you need help with how to go about doing any of these things I mentioned, let us know, I'll be glad to help & I'm sure if I'm not around someone else will. Or if you go to Microsoft they have all the info on how to do it. That's how I learned...
Hope this helped a bit.......Valerie
Valjean,
If you look at this <a target="_blank" href=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q267951>article</a> by Microsoft, it explains how System Restore uses its resources. I have been using it for two years now as well, and have not (touch wood) had any problem like you describe.
This portion of the article is under Data Store.
<font color=blue>"Once the Data Store reaches 90 percent of the allotted size, it begins to "purge" older Restore Points on a first-in first-out (FIFO) basis until the Data Store reaches 50 percent of its allotted size."</font color=blue>

Nectarios,
I'm sorry we haven't been able to help you with your System Restore problem as yet. I've done some looking around without much success, but I dd find this article by Microsoft.
You've likely already seen it, but just in case you haven't, here it is:
<a target="_blank" href=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q306768>Troubleshooting System Restore in Windows Millennium Edition</a>
Here's a thread from another forum regarding a problem similar to yours:

Hope it helps.
