xp disk defragmenter (WXP)

I started a disk defragmentation, and had to stop it right after it had started. Now every time I try to fragment it tells me there was an error and it has to shut down. Is there any other way to fix this without having to completely restore my pc?

also it only does this on my c:\ drive. The message it gives is that the connection to the defragmenter engine has been lost, restart defragmentation. But d:\ works fine.

Try it in safe mode

No good, does the same thing stops after 1% defragment and say's "the connection to the defragmenter engine has been lost, restart defragment". It will defragment d:\ drive but never c:\ drive.
