I booted into the MS DOS prompt. Typing exit does not get me out of it and back into windows. Typing win98 does not get me out. Computer will just re-boot back into the ms dos prompt. How do I get out?

Sometimes it works to re-boot the computer and when the Starting Windows... message comes up, immediately press the Ctrl key several times to get the menu and choose Normal startup.
If you don't see the Starting Windows... message, hold the Ctrl key down shortly after hearing the system beep.
There's 2 MS-DOS 'modes', one as a 'window' in Windows [Shutdown to MS-DOS mode] and the other without Windows running. The Exit only works with the first mode as the second mode doesn't recognize the Exit command.

I did the "control" key and selected "normal". It still re-booted back into ms dos. I even tried selecting "safe mode". This worked but when shutting down and selecting restart (from safe mode), it still booted into ms dos. Any other??

I'd probably, at the C: prompt, type [press Enter after each line]:
path=c:\windows\command
attrib -r -h -s msdos.sys
edit msdos.sys
Look at the entries in msdos.sys and compare to this:
[Paths]
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C
[Options]
BootMulti=0
BootGUI=1
DoubleBuffer=1
AutoScan=1
WinVer=4.10.2222
;
;The following lines are required for compatibility with other programs.
;Do not remove them (MSDOS.SYS needs to be >1024 bytes).
At the bottom of the file, usually the only entry will be something for Network, mine is Network=0 .
Maybe something has changed.

Good Morning,
I looked at the msdos parameters. I did have to add the last two lines (autoscan & winver). I saved changes and booted into "normal" mode. Computer still came up in msdos mode...C:\Windows> (prompt). By the way, this is a second computer networked to mine. Thanks. Any other??

Don't know why I missed this "Typing win98 does not get me out." but does typing win at the C:\> prompt do anything.

Hi,
Been out of town for a while. But I had tried typing win at the prompt. It did not get me out of the dos mode as it should have. It kept going back to the c:\prompt. So I finally gave up, put the floppy boot-up disk in and that's how I got back into windows. Quirky, hu?? Anyway, thanks for ur help.

do you have all of these files in the c:\root
Msdos.---
Msdos.sys
Autoexec.dos
Autoexec.bat
config.sys
config.dos
If you are misisng any of these files when you boot to the dos prompt you may not get back.......
Thanks
