Hi All!
I installed 1Gb + 256mb of ram and my puter didn't want to play....
I found an article that said to limit the MaxPhysPage but My problem is what can I do with the extra ram that will not be in use cause I have 2-512 cards and 1-256 mb card.. I can take the second 512 back cause I still have time to trade it in on 256/128 that is cheaper..... Then make windows think that it has only 886 mb of ram to work with......
If I trade the 512 in on a 128 I will not be losing that much ram about 10 mb I can live with that...
If I trade the 512 in on a 256 I will not be losing that much ram about 138 mb I can live with that to...
but I can't live with having a loss of a 394mb if I keep all three cards
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What to do..............
Thanks
Mac!!!

The motherboard does support the amount of memory you want to use, doesn't it? Most have a limit of 256MB or 512MB and some newer ones have a 1GB limit. Those limits are per each memory slot/socket and multiply each module by the number of slots. Mine will take up to 256MB in each of 3 slots for 768MB maximum.
Could also be a conflict between the modules themselves.
Win98 has problems when trying to use more than 512MB, maybe WinME does to. Has to do with vcache.
Win95 has different limits depending on the chipset on the motherboard.

The mother board is suppose to support 3Gb..
Some articles say the error is cause I'm out of interrupts.... I have to much stuff pluged in....
One article said it was only a window 95 issue and it doesn't happen in windows 98 Hum why is this so if I'm runing windows 98 SE
All of the modules are lifetime memory....
The mother board will see all of the ram....
the computer can be booted into safe mode and see all...
Thanks

Win98 has problems when trying to use more than 512MB. If it sounds like a stuck car horn on this issue, it is because there's some things that just can't be worked around. The best way [sometimes only way] around the limit is upgrading to Win2000 or WinXP, love all the memory thrown at it.
The motherboard support for 3GB of RAM does not get around the issue of Win98 not supporting more than 512MB of RAM.
Win98 supports IRQ sharing and is pretty good about it but once in a while some devices/drivers won't cooperate.
As to booting safe mode, Win98 doesn't load all the drivers including the video card.
Here's a page that might shed some light:

I guess I'll just return the 512 to the store and get a 256 or 128 stick then limit it to 886 because I already have the vcache set at
[vcache]
MinFileCache=0
MaxFileCache=196608
And I have a AGP card that has 32mb on it so I am up against the wall....
I don't want XP cause I have heard that after you set up the hard drive you have to call the bill gate's computer inorder to activate it and after you activate it to many time you have to call to get activated... What a crock of crack... I like to play with no hassels......
Plus I have heard the old dos is out the window to.... I like to use DOS to do stuff! It is limited but!!!! Some things are just as easy to do in DOS....
Thanks

Activation isn't that bad, usually by Internet then if making too many changes to hardware the phone call will be necessary. But can only activate that copy of WinXP on 1 computer.

Sure, the 'old' DOS may be out but MS-DOS 6.22 [the last one] doesn't work with FAT32 or NTFS formatted drives anyway, 2GB and smaller FAT16 partitions only, same as with Win95/95A. Win95B and later work with FAT32 but not NTFS. WinNT4 was FAT16 and NTFS4 only. Win2000/XP is FAT16, FAT32, and NTFS. I can still run some DOS things in a Command Prompt window in WinXP, left the hard drives at FAT32 so I can boot to a Win98 floppy and still access the drives.

I have no problem with the dos that comes with windows 98 SE....... I am running fat32 I can even set up my 80 Gb hard drive using the format.com all of it the whole thing with out any over lays......
Yes when you used the older dos you had to use a overlay......... I hated that.....
it worked but boot up time was a trip you had to hit the space bar then put a disk in a:\ or something like that in order to see the c: drive .... The overlay had to be installed first.......
Thanks

Apart from the fact that this is a well-known problem, and Microsoft have a workaround for it, (posted above) there is the other factor that for 99% of users that much RAM in Windows 9x (including ME) is an out and out waste of money, because any improvement after 256mb will be imperceptible.
What apps are you running that you seriously think will benefit from this inordinate amount of RAM?

Do you have the answer of what to do with the extra ram that will not be used~~~~~~~~~~
My computer is very fast by not using a swap file.. I increased the Vcache to a very high value and changed the web page priorty values... My web pages load lighting fast even though I'm on dial-up... So There I need the extra Ram for IE 6.0.....
When the wife gets on the puter she goes crazy in her OE plus we have all the messengers services running to....
YES YOU DO NEED MEMORY the more the better......
Thanks
