How many of you - particularly those of you using 56K modems - have encountered a peculiar display distortion when you're waiting for the download of your homepage and, in your impatience, you prematurely scroll to a favourite position further down the page? The distortion kinda stretches out what's already on the screen and produces a sort of 'bar code' effect. As soon as the download has completed, the screen snaps into proper display.

This seems to occur only on the homepage. It'll happen with both conventional scrolling or with use of the wheel in a wheelmouse.

I've checked with one or two contacts of mine, using different versions of Windows and different versions of Internet Explorer, and the problem (annoyance, more like) is common. People using broadband or DSL probably wouldn't notice it because, in their cases, the downloads would be much faster.

Has anyone got an explanation for this? A remedy, perhaps?

I get what you're talking about, on my screen. I think something due to my display adapter, which I thought was up to date ... but may not be. Also investigated this earlier and found that it could be connected to BIOS needing update. Not helpful I realize, sorry. But lastly when I downloaded DirectX 4.8, or whatever the latest version is, sometimes I think it is referred to as 8 - anyway the AGP texturing was not available and I think I found out more than latest Direct X does not work with - well let's see all of its features don't work with Win98. Now that isn't relevant unless you also have downloaded DirectX latest. And even then it may not be relevant, if you run the Direct X text and you get AGP texturing (which my BIOS says that I am supposed to be able to reflect) as well as all of DirectX's 3D. Anyway if you have found out what it is - alot more precise than my iffy statements, please write back the board.

I used to get the same on ZDNET. This was not my homepage.

I've not seen it happen for quite a while now, i can't explain what was causing it
