View Full Version : Link-Click Problem(make sense?) (WME)

My system (Dell 933mhz ME. 512 Ram) is freezing when I click on links. Not everytime, but much too often. The pointer stays as a 'hand' and I can't do anything. Can't close or right click on taskbar window. Nothing...
End up having to Ctrl-Alt-Delete & close down Internet Explorer which says the page is not responding.
Any ideas?
Thanks......Valerie

You should start by doing some cleaning:

Delete your cache folders in MS-DOS. Windows will automatically create new ones on reboot.

Insert a boot disk, and start the computer
Type the following lines, pressing ENTER after each one:

c:
cd windows
smartdrv
deltree tempor~1
deltree history
deltree cookies

NOTE: Press Y if you are prompted to confirm any deletion

Type win (or 'exit') followed by clicking enter in order to return to Windows.

If no joy, try repairing IE: Control Panel > Software Add\Remove > MS Internet Explorer > Remove > Repair IE

You might also try reinstalling or upgrading IE.

What version are you running?

If no joy, please do this:

Download <a target="_blank" href=http://www.spywareinfo.com/files/startuplist.zip>StartupList</a>

Unpack, doubleclick it, and it will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.

Go to Edit > select all, copy it and post the contents here.

Hi Tony,
I have a Start-up Disk that I created when I first bought my computer, is that what you mean by Boot Disk?
I tried what you first said with that disk & the first screen that came on gave me choices like starting with CD
support & one was safe mode. I had never seen this particular screen before, not the normal F8 screen.
I got to the A:\prompt & I tried typing in what you wrote & I got to 'deltree tempor~1 & it kept saying
'Bad Command or filename'.
So where did I go wrong here?...Valerie

TonyKlein
10-06-2002, 01:38 AM
At the a prompt, you did first type C:, in order to go to your hard drive, and then move to your Windows directory, as advised?

Also, the deltree tempor~1 assumes your Temporary Internet files folder is indeed C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files.

If it's located elswhere or named differently, the path obviously needs to be adapted.

Please go to Internet Options &gt; General tab, and click "settings".

What is the default path for your Temporary Internet Files folder you see there?

valjean
10-07-2002, 12:07 AM
Tony,

Yes, at the A:\promt I typed what you wrote.
I tried it again just a moment ago, this time typing in the complete words 'Temporary Internet Files'
which are on my C:\Windows\ drive.
This time it completed what you asked except when
I typed exit and then typed win, I ended up with a Blue Screen.
The message said:
"While initializing device IFSMGR"
"The microsoft Installed File System Manager cannot find the helper driver.
Please ensure that IFSMGR.sys has been installed." "System Halted"...
Then nothing. I had to hit the re-start button.
I checked & it did delete the Temp. Internet Files & History, etc.
So what do you think? Cause I have no idea what that means.
Thanks......Valerie

Well, first, you apparently succeeded in deltreeing your cache folders which is good.

As for your error, MS has an article about that one:

<a target="_blank" href=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q258471&>Error Message: The Following File Is Missing or Corrupted: C:\Windows\Ifshlp.sys</a>

Try rebooting once more. Are you still getting that error?

valjean
10-07-2002, 09:30 PM
Hi Tony,

No, I haven't experienced the error after re-start.
The only 2 times I've received that error is just
recently when tried to delete those files with the start-up disk.
Why couldn't I get 'exit' or 'win' to get me out of
whatever I was doing?
What was doing anyway?
Will you explain it for me?

I did go to the link you provided, but really didn't
understand what file or files I'm supposed to change
and how to exactly go about it.

Appreciate the help.......Valerie

Hi Valerie,

As I explained, you deleted your Temporary Internet Files, History, and Cookie (cache) folders in MS-DOS.

When you restart Windows, Windows creates brand new ones, doing away with any corruption in the old folders that you you may have had.

If you didn't get another error, and everything's working fine, that's good, and I'd advise you to forget about it.

It it were to return, please post back, and we'll deal with it.

Cheers, Tony

Great Tony & Thanks.....

I haven't been on-line a very much since I posted
the with the original clicking on the link problem,
but I will keep an eye on it, as you said, & will post
back if it continues.

Appreciate all your help.....Valerie

Hi Tony,
It's me again.
Well, the problem is still here & just driving me crazy.

So what do you think?...Valerie

Well, if it's just one or two files having been downgraded, it's easy to correct, but in this case I would reinstall IE, or upgrade to IE 6.0 SP1 for a start.

Cheers, Tony

Thanks Tony.......Valerie

Hey Tony one more thing....
I just went to the Microsoft Site to do the Update/Upgrade & it was showing the Cumulative Update
for SP #2 & I remembered that ever since I installed the SP #2, my computer has been downloading
an awful lot of Updates. So I went to the View History page & all these Updates that have been
installing lately have all failed. At least 6 of them. Unfortunately they don't tell you that at the time it
does the Auto Update & Install.

So I tried to download it directly from their site & same thing. Still failed. It goes all the way through
the download process, but then nothing. I viewed the History again & same thing, it failed.

The SP #2 downloaded & installed fine.
What do you think? Should I go ahead & try to download the IE #6 from their site?
Appreciate any advice......Valerie

You cannot start Windows from a bootdisk. That's why you got that error. You have to restart without the bootdisk for Windows to load.

Here's a link to an article with a list of Programs which interfere with Windows Update. If you have any of these running in the Background you should first disable them and then try the Update again.
<a target="_blank" href=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q241234>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q241234</a>

Hi Mosaic1,
I went to the Link you provided.
I don't have any of those programs.
Since one list had a Heading of "Download Managers",
I went ahead & Uninstalled my "Download Boost Gold 2002", & went
back to the Update site & it failed again.
Any new suggestions?
Thanks.......Valerie

Here's a link to the Java Virtual Machine. Even though you already have it installed, it may not be working correctly. Download it. then find msjava.dll and rename it as msjava.old

Install the VM msjavx86.exe is its name. Reboot.

When you download and install, always be sure to turn off all but the essetnial programs running in the background. And scan any files with your AV before you turn it off and perform the install.

For your other problem, do you have a pop up stopper installed? Could we please have a look at your startup programs? IF an IE Upgrade doesn't take care of this, it might be a problem with a background task.

Please download a program called Startup List. Run it and then copy and paste the results here. It will generate a rather long file full of information.

Mosaic1,
Well, I downloaded from the link you provided.
Before Install I changed the name of the file
msjava.dll to msjava.old.
During Install a DOS window came up & said cannot
run in DOS mode, but the title bar said Finished, like
that was the name of the file.
I re-started after that. I'm assuming that I re-named
that file so I could install a fresh one. But
there is not another file called msjava.dll, just the
one I re-named.
Is this what was supposed to happen or did I do
something wrong?
Valerie
P.S. I'll send the Start-Up list in a moment.

Valerie,

A common cause in Win ME for updates not wanting to install, is a huge number of Oem*.inf files in the Windows\Inf folder that are 0 KB in size.

You need to delete ALL of them, if you have them.

<a target="_blank" href=http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ARTICLES/Q281/9/67.asp>Computer Stops Responding (Hangs) During Setup, Installing Updates, or Adding New Hardware</a>

Then try again, as Mosaic1 already said, with everything unnecessary shut down, especially your antivirus.

Cheers, Tony

Yes. A dos Windows does come up at the end of that install if I remember correctly. If you do not have an msjava.dll, then try rebooting and running the install again. The file should be found in C:\windows\system. Without it, no java applet is going to run. If you still have a problem after the second insall, try another download without using the Download Manager. Or first you could try renaming msjava back and registering the file again. Go to Start>run and copy in this command, Press enter:
regsvr32 msjava.dll
Have a look here to see if your Java Works:
http://www.net-integration.net/reviews/spybot1.html (http://zone.msn.com/bejeweled/>http://zone.msn.com/bejeweled/</a>

Your)

Read the directions. This program also offers to clear your histories of recently used files, temps and also cookies. Be sure to look for updates too by pressing the Online button when the program opens.

EDIT: Nice find, Tony. Let's hope the OEM.inf files are at the root of this. That would be a very nice explanation.

Thanks Mo.

I do suspect that could be the cause.

I've seen it happen a number of times, including recently when my neighbor was unable to download and install DirectX on his ME system.

There were literally thousands of those files.

Valerie,
It was the msjava.dll that was on the PC already that was changed and not the downloaded one, correct?

Hi Tony,

I went to the link & did what it said. I only had 3 files named oem*.inf.
In the instructions they had me make a copy of the 2 files that were
over 0kb., and copy to a folder they had me make on my desktop.
Then I deleted the other file through the command prompt, which brings
me to my question....What am I supposed to do with those 2 files I copied into the file on the desktop? It didn't say.

After that I re-started the computer a couple of times & then re-downloaded
the Updates & it still didn't work. Here is a copy of my download Update History from the Microsoft site. It seems to me all was fine until I downloaded SP #2. Here's the copy:

Yes, it was the original file that I changed to msjava.old from msjava.dll.
Thanks for jumping in to help....Valerie

Hi Mosaic,

Well, I did what Tony suggested in the previous post, but to no avail. I tried installing it a couple more times, but nothing. As soon as I click on the .exe file the DOS window comes up & says the program can't be run in DOS mode. I have checked to see if the file is back (msjava.dll), but it is not. I went to the link for Bejeweled & it wouldn't work. I went back & re-named the file from msjava.old to msjava.dll & ran the Start/Run command & it said it was successful. I went to Bejeweled, this time it looked as if the applet was trying to load, but you know how when you run your mouse over a java applet it will read in the Status bar? Well, the status bar said "Load: class SwapIt not found". So I don't know if it is working or not. Do you have another place I can test it?
I went back to microsoft & tried that Update again, as I wrote in the other post to Tony. I was reading some knowledge base stuff from Microsoft on the Java problem & it suggested I download Java update again, so I did, then went back to the Applet, but it said the same thing as before. The knowledge base article number was Q329077 in case you need it.

I shut down the WordWeb from running at start-up. I installed it a few months ago & I seem to use it just about every day, so I thought I should leave it running, but it's not necessary.
As far as Comet Curser, I became aware of the Spyware problem approx. a year ago & un-installed it from Ad-Aware, but I'm not very Registry handy (Yet). As far as Acrobat Reader, I don't know. I have Adobe Acrobat 5.0 & Adobe Distiller 5.0. I may have un-installed Acrobat Reader at one time, but can't remember.
I will download the Spybot Search in a few minutes.
Is there anything else I can do?
Thanks everyone for the help.....Valerie

You can copy those two files back to your Windows\Inf folder again.

I'd advise you to download the update to disk, and install it in Safe Mode.

This may well work.

You'll find it here: <a target="_blank" href=http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/q323759ie/default.asp>http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/q323759ie/default.asp</a>

Before you do, empty your Windows\Temp folder completely, and do a search for, and delete a wininit.ini file, if you happen to have one.

hi valjean,
Sometimes Java gives us a hard time. I had a terrible time with it once and it just would not install correctly. I would try to download it again. You are missing pieces of it. This time please do not use a Download Manager of any kind. And turn off your Anti Virus while Downloading. After, scan the file with your AV. Turn the AV back off and do the install. Reboot. Here's a different location for that file.

Hi Mosaic or anyone that can answer,
Help.
I'm installing it right now (JavaVM) & the first small window that came up is asking "IsNetworkPathA" that is verbatim. What do I answer, Yes or No?
Is there going to be any other technical questions like that?
Thanks....Valerie

Sorry I didn't get back sooner. That's not normal.
Are you certain you downloaded the correct version VM for your operating System? Are you networked?

valjean
10-31-2002, 06:02 PM
Yes, I went to the link you provided & downloaded the one for
Windows 95/98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows XP; 5.4 MB.
The file was called "msjavx86.exe".
And it's okay you didn't get back sooner, I know how busy life can get.
I finally had to go to sleep, so I just shut-down my computer.
So what do you think I can do now?
Thanks again......Valerie

Mosaic1
10-31-2002, 07:51 PM
I am honestly not sure what is going on. I think you might have had a VM problem to begin with. But this is odd.

EDIT: I signed off and reinstalled the JAVA VM again. I wanted to be certain of how it went. It is supposed to be a simple matter. I wish I had an idea of what was going on here.

If you were to start in Safe Mode and try the install I wonder how that would go. Would you do that please? Don't forget to rename msjava.dll back to msjava.old before you try the install again.

Hi Mosaic,
Before I read your last post I clicked on it again to see if I would get the same message, but I didn't.
This time in the Title Bar it read:
72(some strange character)Menu=208
Then the message read:
[FontSubstitutes]
Helv=MS Sans Serif
Tms
Very strange huh?
Do you still want me to try the install in Safe Mode?
Valerie

Mosaic1
11-01-2002, 07:33 AM
You have downloaded twice and twice you have received strange results. Try it in Safe Mode and see what happens.
The FontSubstitues line sounds like it is being read from the win.ini file. I have no idea why it is doing that.

Have you done a thorough Virus scan? And also, at this point, have you considered trying a Restore point? You can undo a restore if the result isn't good. You'll lose other changes you have made. But this is very strange.

valjean
11-01-2002, 09:29 PM
I'll try installing it in Safe Mode right now.
I had to dump all my System Restore points because it was full & wouldn't work any longer.
So I only have about of weeks worth.
Talk to you after I try Safe Mode & thanks again....Valerie

valjean
11-02-2002, 01:49 AM
Well, I tried it in Safe Mode & still got some weird messages.
The Title Bar said T, & the message said A required resource cannot be located.
Then I tried it again & the Applet was just blank. No Title, no message.
I did run my Virus Scan over my whole system & it came back clean.
I was really having problems with the Link-Clicking problem earlier today.
Any other ideas? Valerie

Tony,
I finally did what you asked here, in between what Mosaic has me doing.
I downloaded the Update to Disk. First I deleted everything in my Temp folder, and I did a search for that file you asked me to delete (wininit.ini), but I didn't find it. When I went to Install, it says "This update requires Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2 to be installed."
I don't understand why it is saying this. I went to my Add/Remove Programs list just to double check & it says I do have it.
So what do you think? Weird huh?

TonyKlein
11-02-2002, 03:11 AM
I really don't know what to say, Valerie.

Your computer is behaving strangely, to say the least.

As Mo already remarked, installing VM ought to be a synch, and I don't know why you should be getting this error message.

valjean
11-02-2002, 04:12 AM
Tony,
That's for sure. I don't know about this thing.
I've had it for 2 years & this is the first major problem I've had. Oh well, what else to do now?
I've been thinking about Upgrading to 2000 or XP, which do you think would be the better choice?
Thanks for all your help......Valerie

Hi Valerie,
That message about not having IE5.5 is nothing to worry about. You were probably trying to install a patch which is older that a cumulative patch you already have insalled. The older patch has a file version checker. It didn't recognize your newer file version from the more recent update and so it generated the error.

The Resource message is difficult. I am not sure what that is about. I did a little research. I found the error, but so far no solutions. I'll keep at it and if I find anything, I'll let you know.

Mosaic1

Did you say you had upgraded Internet Explorer to Version 6 yet? If so, was it successful?

I have the exe to install java, and I ran oit through a tool called depends.exe
This lists all the file dependencies for it to load. If you are missing a resource, I wonder if that is a dll not registered correctly or a damaged file.
The problem is the files this is dependent upon are some major Core Windows files.

Here's a link to a download of Dependecny Walker. Open msjavx86.exe in DW and seeif it generates an error regarding a particular file. IF it does, you might have a look to see what version you have of the file and post back with whatever information you wre able to get.

Hi Mosaic,
No, I have IE 5.5 with SP #2, that is why that last message is strange because I have already downloaded & installed SP #2. If you look back in one of my previous posts I listed all the Update History from Microsoft. Everything has failed since I upgraded to IE 5.5 SP #2. Then I tried repairing it & it said I couldn't because of some version errors. I also posted all those in a previous post.
I re-installed the Update for SP #2 ( it was still in a folder on my C:/ drive). Then I went back to Add/Remove to try the repair, it still wouldn't let me repair it, but this time it only gave one file error.
Here's the Error:
Version 5.50.4134.600 of file pngfilt.dll exists, but the version needs to be greater than 5.50.4807.2300.
And I'm still having the Link-Clicking & Freezing problem.
I'll try the web site you just gave & see what I can come up with. Do you think these 2 problems could be inter-related (the JavaVM & IE)???
Thanks.....Val

Tony & Mosaic,
I just tried to install the August Cumulative Update file that wouldn't install earlier.
Well, this time it worked. I am now downloading another security patch that the microsoft update page says I need. It's an Outlook Express Security Update. It just finished & everything seems good.
I don't think I'll try the IE Repair unless the problem persists.
Now I'll work on the Java problem. I'll check out that web site Mosaic & download & run that program.
Talk to you guys soon.......Valerie

Valerie,
You can extract pngfilt.dll from the Windows Update setup files. It's located in this cab:
Advauth.cab
It belongs in C:\windows\system

valjean
11-04-2002, 10:49 PM
Mosaic,
How do I "extract" it?
Do I use the Extract button through WinZip or can I
just drag & drop it into the System Folder and over-write the old file?
Or is there another way I should do it?
Thanks.......Valerie

Mosaic1

Drag and drop won't work on a cab file. You can use Winzip if you have it. After the extraction try the IE repair again.

Valjean,
I've been following this thread with fascination. You're having one heck of a time, aren't you? I use WinMe as well and I've had some strange problems, but nothing like this. Thank goodness!

I noticed that you were asking about extracting *.cab files. Maybe this link from Microsoft will help. Here is the summary from that page:

<font color=blue>"This step-by-step article describes how to extract compressed files. Many Microsoft product files are compressed and stored in cabinet (.cab) files; to use a file in a .cab file, you must first extract that file. You may want to extract a new copy of a file if you have a missing or damaged file. This article shows you multiple methods for doing so. Windows 95 and Windows 98 are available on CD-ROM or floppy disks, both of which contain compressed cabinet files. Windows Millennium Edition (Me) is available on CD-ROM; it contains compressed cabinet files and also installs compressed cabinet files in the C:\Windows\Options\Install folder. These cabinet files contain the actual Windows files. This article describes how to extract individual files from compressed cabinet files."</font color=blue>

Here is the site:
<a target="_blank" href=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q129605#2>HOW TO: Extract Original Compressed Windows Files</a>

That's all from me, I just dropped in to give you the link. I'll leave you with Mo and Tony. You couldn't ask for better assistance than they are giving you already.
Good luck getting everything straightened out.

Valerie,
Nana's link is for another time. this one is not going to be that complicated. Find the cab file. Open it. Right click on the file you want to extract. You'll see the choice to extract. It all depends on whether you have associated cabs with winzip or you are letting Windows have the association.

You're welcome, although it looks like I may have steered you wrong with that link.

Make sure you follow Mo's directions over what I've suggested. Mo knows far more than most of us can ever hope to about computers.

Hi Mosaic,
I extracted the file from the .cab file & then overwrote the old file & it worked.
Then I tried the IE repair again & it worked.
But... I am still having the problem with clicking on certain hyperlinks. It doesn't happen all the time, but it does happen on certain particular links that I have tried.
Example: When I'm at Yahoo & I click on the Account Info hyperlink. It always freezes Internet Explorer, then I have to do Ctrl-Alt-Delete because IE is not responding. And it will happen on other links also, but that particular link it always happens on.
Any other suggestions or ideas?
Do you still need me to do the Dependency Walker or the SpyBot Search & Destroy? I downloaded both of those programs, but never ran them 'cause we went on to other things.
Thanks for your consistent help......Valerie

I installed the SpyBot program, but after I've opened it up & read the help file & the web site, it looks pretty complicated though. Can you maybe explain what I should do? It seems like it will delete things that shouldn't be deleted. I didn't find the help file or the web site very helpful for a beginner like myself.
So any help in this area will be appreciated....Valerie

Valerie,
Hi. Spybot needs to be setup. When you first start it, a screen of flags shows. Click on the flag representing the language you speak. At the next screen, click the settings button. Most of the default choices area already checked. For example, making a backup. Spybot woll offer to clean not only Spyware but also lists of most recently used in the registry and cookies, temp internet files etc. The entries in Red are the dangerous entries. Anything in Green is your choice. They all are your choice, but the ones in red are the nasties.

I would also recommend that you install and run BHO Demon . Here's a link to that.

Mosaic,
I am still a bit concerned about running Spybot.
What about under the Excludes Section for the File Extensions? What does all that mean? Do I have to click all the file types I have on my computer?
Under the same Excludes what about the Products section. Do I need to click anything in there? Like under the "Tracks.uti", I have some of those programs on my computer?
Don't mean to be a pest on this stuff, but I don't want to screw things up. Too much anyway(smile)...Valerie

Hello, Valerie:

I don't mean to butt in with any advice, as I am a complete beginner - I can now do about 5 different things, but only because of the good folks here. I'm real timid about trying anything and have to be told specifically to rightclick or doubleclick, etc., so I laughed when you described yourself as a beginner - after reading this thread, I see you've done plenty I don't have a clue about...but I understand very well about not wanting to proceed without knowing what choices you might have to make. So just wanted to pass on my experience with SpyBot S&D. Tony K. provided me with these instructions:

After installing, go to Online tab. Search for and install all updates. Next: Settings tab&gt;File Sets - uncheck System Internals, and Tracks. Shut down Internet Explorer, hit "Check All", and have SpyBot remove all it finds.

I was terrified when I found more to do, but figured Tony had given me the necessary instructions, so tried to leave the rest of the stuff as close to the way I first saw it as possible. I left all the Main Settings as they were. The Automation section was blank, and I checked the choice to run at program start. Under Expert settings, I unchecked "Use shredder to remove usage tracks."

I too read all the info on the site and found it not for the complete beginner, however, this worked for me, I didn't lose anything I didn't want to lose, and I found it clearer at the end, when viewing the stuff it found, it gives descriptions and so forth. You could see my recent SpyBot post on this board if you like.

I also noticed your enquiry about Nana's "deletion of index.dat files" thread. I just did this (well, Hally pretty much did it for me!) and am real happy it's finally done.

Re: both of the above-mentioned...My system is Windows 98 so I'm sure Mosaic or others here can let you know if the methods I tried would be suitable for your machine.

It's just amazing to get all the help from the folks here..before finding this forum, know what I did on computer? Not much. I was past the "This is your mouse" stage and then suddenly everything else was incomprehensible. I've never felt uncomfortable posing the most inane question here, and always received not only help but encouragement too. On that note, good luck with the rest of your computer "chores"!

Janann,
Thanks for all your input. I haven't had a chance to work on it yet. I'm in class right now.
I did get a moment last night to download the Updates for it, but nothing else.
What you've said sounds very simple & I have gone through the program with a fine tooth comb, per se, but I'm probably getting myself all worked-up for nothing. Knowing myself the way I do, I have to understand what the heck I'm doing before I do it.
Again, thanks for the input & I'll give-it-a-go when I get home tonight. Well, maybe I'll pass-out then when I wake-up I'll do it. Big smile to ya!!!
Valerie

The above is what I would say you should delete.
Most are recent file lists. You can delete them or not. SAme with the logs. It's up to you. Then there is the typed URL list in the OE address bar. And the Temporary Internet Files.

This program can look intimidating. Take your time and go over what you see and you will find it easier to use.

Internet Explorer: Cookies( (30 cookies)) (Directory)
C:\WINDOWS\Cookies If you empty this, you'll lose all cookies. I would leave it and do an excludes on cookies. That way you can save the ones you want.

And I agree, maybe an IE upgrade may solve the original problem for you. Have you considered that?

Thank Mosaic,
Thanks for going over that for me.
Those cookies are ones that I am keeping.
They are Opt-Out cookies.
