View Full Version : Nagging Network Log On Pop-up (W98)

I have had my DUN set up to save my password for a couple of years. At one point I knew how to get rid of the nasty pop Network Logon screen that pops up every time I dial into my ISP. I recently down loaded a program called "Weather Bug" while surfing a sight about animated GIF's. I removed the program but now when I dial into my ISP I get that nasty little pop-up asking me to put in my user name and password for the Network.

I have all the settings in my Network Properties set correctly, including "Windows Logon". I even ripped out the "AutoLogon" from the registry but the logon pop-up keeps popping up!

I am overlooking something but I just can't figure out what. How do I get rid of that logon screen? It's driving me nuts!! Please someone save my sanity (what's left of it anyway).

BTW my computer is not networked.

Go to Start/Find/Files or Folders, and type *.pwl in the 'named' field.
Delete the files with the *.pwl extension that come up.

Now reboot

You should now get the login box. Type your name and password, or leave the password field blank for no password.
Click OK.

Try making a Dial-Up Networking connection, and see whether your password's retained.

If no joy, do this:

Copy the bold to Notepad, and save as DUN.reg
Doubleclick to have it merged into the registry.
Reboot.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Policies\Network]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Network\Real Mode Net]
"autologon"=-

And here is an article:

Good luck, Tony

Nothing I tried worked. I had to reload Windows for another reason and after the reload the problem with the pop-up was gone. Go figure.
