system: win 98 compaq PIII 550
problem: ADSL internet quit working so I checked dsl modem, seems fine, then tried to release and renew ip address in winipcfg(no luck). The ip address will not release or change, when try to renew, it gives "error 32: renewing adapter".

With a dial up modem installed as well, I used this to try and find some information as it worked to connect to the internet to search at slow speeds. I tried setting a static ip and restarting, then setting back to get automatic, but still comes back exact same ip address.

I then reinstalled the network card, drivers, and set up required settings. This made things worse, now the dial up doesn't even work. Anytime I try to use any program, that connects to the internet, it crashes "this program has done an illegal operation and will close".

So far the only thing I can find that may have anything to do with it is "mdm.exe", but other than that I am ready to reinstall windows (what a pain).

Any help is appreciated thanks,

Zairn

If there is anything corrupted in your systems, reinstalling is definately a plan. But before you do that, try to just unplug your network card first, and boot it up and make sure you dont get error as normal. Then put the normal card back, and reinstall the driver, the protocol and so on.

It's a pain, but sometimes, if you reinstall whole windows, you may end up the same thing......

p.s. Also check for virus.

Have you contacted the sys admin at your ISP,sometimes a simple reboot at their end does the trick..

pinging the gateway works fine, and with another the computer internet works. nic works fine in another computer, so it's looking like windows install. It has been over a year since it has been installed, so it's about time to do it.

Try another slot,a windows install takes quite some time...
