a virus scan found reg.startpage A virus in file windows\sp.reg. I deleted it and now every time I boot up I get a window at the end saying windows\sp.reg: error opening file. My PC still seems to run as normal though. So what does this sp.reg do because everything seems normal other than the message window - I just click on ok and it goes.

Go to Start > Run > Msconfig, and uncheck the line referring to sp.dll on the Startup tab.
Click OK, close Msconfig, and reboot.

Ah, my bad!
Win95 doesn't have Msconfig.
Download it here:

Good luck, Tony

Thanks Tony. downloaded that Msconfig stuff but could not find reference to sp.ll only sp, so unchecked that! Restarted the PC and the fatal exception error blue screen came up. Restarted again and it appears to have cured it - I hope!!

Dang Tony, that link made me homesick. I grew up on Whidbey Island.
