I have XP and I never really messed around with DOS when we had 98 or ME, so I'm not too familiar with it. I want to install Win 98, but I want a fresh install and I'm not sure how to get rid of 95. This is what I think I'm supposed to do, if someone could confirm or correct me I'd really appeciate it.
Ok, so I restart in DOS mode. Type in FDISK.EXE.....delete primary DOS partition. (There's only enough room for one partition.) Now, from here does it take me back to create a new partition? And when I create that new partition is that when I do the prompt to copy start-up files? And when do I type in FORMAT.EXE? The thing that's throwing me off is, if I delete the partition, how is it still reading my DOS command, and how can it copy my start-up files?
Thankyou for any help.

for clean install...
you must have a start-up disk for your desired operating system like win98 start-up disk...
your win98 start-up disk must contain fdisk.exe...
first boot up from your floopy drive....
then at the a: promp type:
a:\fdisk
follow the instruction....
after you have successfully create your new partition... you will prompt to restart your computer...
don't remove your start up disk/or you can just boot your computer to cd rom(your cd rom must contain the win98 installer)
then win98 will pompt you again...
start your computer with cd rom support to start installing your win98 os....
just read the instruction ...../images/forums/icons/smile.gif

Good lord. Yeah, you can do all that, but here's a fast and easy workaround.
Put the 98 CD in the drive there, buddy. Copy the Win98 directory over to the C:\ root.
Boot up with CD-Rom supporting boot disk. Type deltree /y C:\windows\*.*
Watch Window 95 disappear. Type CD Win98. Type setup. Install Windows 98. This way, any directories full of information you created along the way right at the C:\ level will be retained, and you've got your new "clean" install.
Now, if you were wanting the FAT32 support, and you weren't already using Windows 95b, then you're out of luck. Just FDISK it and get on with it.

ey sunroses..i've just realize if you want to use the fdisk and you also have the win98 installer....
you can just boot up with the cd rom.... it also have the same start up as the floopy drive...
to fdisk bypass the start-up menu press f5 then you will be automatically go to a prompt...
type fdisk
after the fdisk restart your computer...
then the start-up menu will appear once again... start computer with cd rom support... the go to drive d:
type:
cd win98
at the win98 folder type:
format c:\s
this will give you make your drive bootable..
then go to c: type
md win98
then type
cd win98
then go to drive d where you are currently at the win98 folder then type
copy . c:
this will copy all the file needed for the installation...
then go to c:\win98
type setup

Did you want to keep XP? Is 98 an upgrade or is it 2nd edition? Do you have a Dos boot disk with CD-Rom support?

The XP is actually on my computer, and that's the only platform I'm used to so I wasn't sure what to do in the 95 which was my in-laws computer. Actually, during that couple hours while waiting for a response, I got a little anxious and (with their permission to screw up) completely messed it all up to where it wouldn't even read a floppy. (But 95 was out!! lol) So now a neighbor who works at Del is going to just combine their two old computers and try to make one good one.
But I do appreciate all the help from all of you. After reading the replies I understand it, and I'm sure it will come in handy one day.
Thankyou!! :)
