I have a P-166, win95-sp2, Matrox Millenium, SB AWE-32. The sound card is intermittently captured by Windows at startup and released at shutdown. Sometimes it takes dozens of shutdowns and restarts until the sound will work. other times it will boot just fine. If the sound works on startup it will remain on regardless of the apps that are run. I spent an hour and a half on the phone with Creative, went through all their possible fixes and we still didn't fix it. They came to the conclusion that Windows is the culprit. Is there something I could look for in the Registry? I know very little about the Registry. I have edited it a couple time with a detailed "HowTo", I am not afraid to jump into it. Any help would be greatly appreciated! ...Harry

Hi Harry,

You didn't give details of how or when this started happening.

This may be a quick and easy solution.

Backup your registry.

Physically uninstall the sound card. reboot. You'll have a new registry without the sound card entries. (thanks to plug-n-play) shutdown. reinstall board. reboot. Make sure you have all the drivers.

Who knows, maybe it's the motherboards expansion slot or bus lines or even your speaker connections or the sound card itself. Maybe even the beginning of Ram problems.

Hope this helps
