I finally decided to do a reinstall of W95B to correct some problems, which I am presuming were registry related.
Two weeks ago I did a RegPack with WinRescue95, a shareware backup utility -- its version apparently of exporting and re-importing the Registry to compact and clean it up. I ended up with a sound card problem, and Norton System Check couldn't access the registry to do its scan. I couldn't reinstall the sound card even with the help of a visiting guest who's done Windows all his life and is a professional. He said just reinstall.
I also did manual registry compact tricks ("Registry Shop-Vac", and one other version of the same trick) and I tried everything suggested at the Norton site.
So the sound card is now OK, but System Check is still barred from scanning the Registry. I've reinstalled Norton, even completely uninstalling it first. I tried their support site's procedure for a clean boot of 95, and still it can't get access.
Any clues? I really believe that type of system maintenance is valuable. I started with regular defrags, scandisks, system checks, regcleans, etc about 8 months ago and have been remarkably trouble free since then. So I really want this one back.
Thanks
