The way I un-installed win2k, is I just formatted the partition where win2k was installed, but now when I boot up the option to boot to win2k of windows is still there but now that win2k is no longer, how to change the dual boot option to just a normal boot! thanks!!!

Three things I usually do, first I boot to a floppy disk for the version still on the hard drive and type sys c:, this will replace the ntloader. Second I also at the A: prompt, type fdisk /mbr, updates the Master Boot Record. Third I delete the boot.ini file in the root of C:, it is hidden and this command goes first: attrib -h -r -s boot.ini, then delete the file. Attrib.exe will have to be on the floppy or the path in Win95/98 would be C:\Windows\Command\attrib -h -r -s boot.ini.

THANK YOU Bertimmenchuh! could you elaborate a bit more about this instructions, the part that confuse me most, is the "attrib.exe will have to be on the floppy" /images/forums/icons/smile.gif

you just have to edit the boot.ini file that's in the root of your "C:" drive..most of what was said applies allthough you can do it all in windows explorer,just chnge your folder options to "show all files"so you can see the hidden files,right click on the file and select "properties"then just uncheck the "read only" box so you can modify it..if you open it with notepad you'll see two sets of entries one for each OS you had installed,you don't really need to know what they all mean,just delete the one that sez win2k or whatever OS it was you took off and that "ghost" should dissappear...i have winXP pro on my "C:" drive and win2k on another drive this is what my boot.ini looks like...
[boot loader]
timeout=15
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
>>multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect<<
if i deleted win2k i would just delete that entire last line that i've marked between the ">> <<" and sez "windows 2000 professional" and since it would then only have one entry to show me,i wouldn't get the boot menu anymore,it would just go straight into winxp...anyway that's how i would do it and that "should" do the trick,does that make sense?

rodzilla here is my boot.ini
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"
and what do I do with this line:
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\winnt Please let me know thanks /images/forums/icons/smile.gif

ok it looks like your "C:" drive is probably win98/me, is that right?i'm sorry i hadn't considered that possibility till after i had posted...if it is you can just delete that file entirely,toss it out and that will eliminate having to do it later from DOS and you won't have to worry about the attrib commands...just follow BertImmenschuh's other instructions...i'll try to clarify what he said a bit
1.from windows98 create a startup disc,or you should have been prompted to make one when you installed the OS originally so you can use that one or any other one you might already have around
2.stick the startup disc in your floppy drive and reboot your computer...now you'll be in DOS..see the "A:" prompt?
3. type "SYS C:" [with no quotation marks]that'll copy the appropriate system files to your "C:" drive
4.once that's done type "FDISK /MBR" [again with no quotes]if it asks if you really want to do that,say yes
5.if you've already deleted the boot.ini file from within windows you should now be done so pop out the startup disc and reboot,if all went well it should all be good,but if not,post back and we'll see if we can straighten you out
