I have a box that someone was playing with and now when I log in as the local administrator the Network Identification tab is grayed out as if I do not have permissions. I am unable to add it to a domain, and short of rebuilding the machine I am at a lost.

Check the status of the effective local security policy via control panel/admin tools. There may be an option in there that relates to the restriction.

As a workaround, you can join a domain from the command prompt. Here's the steps for NT 4.0

I hope it applies to 2000 as well.

If this is a standalone W2K client my guess is that a local policy has been applied. Local policies apply to all users. even admin. Here's how to check. Start - Run - type gpedit.msc. Once the snap in opens traverse to the network settings option and change the values.
