Hi,

I get a quick Preparing to Install message on my screen whenever I start IE 5.5. This does not happen when I use Netscape or any other app. It is independent of whether I have an internet connection or not. It seems like:

1. It is trying to install some apps that were not completely installed when I last ran a repair install.

2. It is some virus that NAV does not detect with latest definition.

Any ideas on how to get rid of it or at least verify what it is.

You want to empty the contents of your Windows\Temp directory completely.

And delete temporary internet files.

Now go to Start > Run, > Regedit and locate the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager

Delete any PendingFileRenameOperations values in this key.

You may also need to check for and remove pending file rename operations in the following registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnceEx

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServicesOnce

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunOnce

If no joy, please post your startups:

Go to Start/run, and type Msinfo32, followed by OK.
Go to Software Environment/Startup Programs.
Click Edit/'Select all', and then 'copy'
Now paste the contents in your post.

Good luck, Tony
