Does anyone know why a fatal exception error occurs when a usb scanner is plugged in? Computer will not reboot with scanner plugged in. When removed, everthing works fine. Any ideas?

Two things that could do it, the USB port is bad/not working or the scanner/cable is not working.

We all, each of us, have a uniqueness, some of us enjoy it, some of us don't.

Scanner works fine on another PC. Put brand new USB PCI card in original PC. Still got fatal exception error. Could Windows 98 be the problem? It is not SE. Would a clean install of Win 98SE be a waste of time?

The only thing Win98SE offers over Win98FE in the USB field is support for USB 2.0 [or as it is soon to be known as High Speed USB], but you have to have the ports that support USB 2.0, either on the motherboard or an add-in card.

An idea then as to what else could be causing the fatal exception error and preventing the USB ports from working?

The only suggestion I'd have at this point is to run SFC [System File Checker] and see if any files got corrupted.

I have noticed that when using an add-in USB card instead of the built-in USB ports, the BIOS has to be changed to disable the built-in USB support or Windows will try to use what the BIOS reports instead of the add-in.

Just to let anyone know, a reformat and reinstall of Windows 98 worked.
