Hi I'd like to know this about a section of "system.ini" in particular the MaxFileCache part of "vcache". As you know there is a tweak where you set the vcache a bit like this
--------------------------
[vcache]
MinFileCache=0
MaxFileCache=8192
ChunkSize=512
--------------------------
I only have 64mb ram . . . I always see the setting for MaxFileCache= set in lots of 1024bytes x 4 in other words lots of 4mb. as you see my setting is 8mb 8192bytes, I've seen 16mb (16384) for people with bigger ram Now here's my question! (sorry) Does it have to be in lots of 4mb 4096bytes could you set it to 10mb or 9mb??? Its bugged me for a while not knowing this, can anyone please tell us if you can set it to any amount you like
Thanks for being patient /images/forums/icons/smile.gif

Usually you set the vcache to be 25% of your physical ram size. In your case, it will be 65536 X 25% = 16384.
Also, set your your Min and Max to be the same number. Chunksize is usually set to 512, so you don't have to change it.

Hally, if you were to go back in computing far enough, you'd find that memory and storage sizes in KB, MB, and GB are usually in multiples of 8 [Octal].

1024, 2048, 4096, 8192 are all evenly divisible by 8.

16mb Ram

Wow! My first was a 386-40MHz with 4MB RAM, 120MB hard drive and 1MB Video Card, all in a black case with black monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

It had MS-DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.1, WordPerfect 5.1 for Windows, and Lotus 1-2-3 for Windows.

Cost me $2800 back in 1992.

10 years later we're back to the black ensembles.

Its so funny when you look back on those computers we had & I'll bet you're Ram has more megabytes now than your whole HDD had way back then Bert, its crazy to think 4mb ram was enough then. . . now you wouldn't even consider it. Cheers Bert

I wouldn't even consider running on 64MB RAM any more, the programs demand more than they used to. MS-DOS 6.22 still runs just fine on 4MB and small hard drives but then the demands aren't much.

The slowest Win98 computer I have has 64MB on it but it is not used, it's a loaner also for sale. The ones in use have 256 or 512MB in them.

I can remember the 345MB hard drives that cost $345 back in '93/'94, a buck a meg was good then. Can buy 4 or 5 20GB drives for that now.
