When I try to download something like winzip or kazaa or any other type of file my computer can't access the page but the page is there. In other words the download page comes up then I get a blank IE page with that little box with the blue triangle green circle and red square. Please help!!

Do this:

o to start/run, and type 'Regedit'
Navigate to the following subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension

Highlight this subkey 'Extension', and choose 'delete'.

Please don't confuse with the 'ExtensionS' key further up.

See the illustration.

Close Regedit, and reboot.

It should fix your problem.

Good luck, Tony

Have tried that several times still can't download and page is still blank. Any other ideas?

Sticb,

That isn't quite right: you cannot try it "more than once", you know.

Provided you delete it the first time, it's gone, and you can't delete something that's no longer there.

Try it this way, please:

Create a new Text file on your desktop, and paste the following bold text into it:

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension]

Save as Extension.reg

Doubleclick it, and answer 'yes' when asked whether you want to merge the contents of the file into the registry.

Reboot.

Tell us whether that helps.

I did what you said but still no luck. I'm not sure why but I have deleted that extension file "several" times because it keeps coming back or something. Like you said "it should be gone" but it isn't and it doesn't go into recycle bin, should it? I will try anything else you think may help, thanks.

actually, It does get deleted(as I just found out) but it reappears after I try to download a file(zip) in this case. So I hope this can help you help me. Thanks again

Registry keys you delete don't end up in the Recycle Bin. They're gone.
This is a little bit of a mystery to me.

BTW, does this happen exclusively when downloading files?

Web pages come up like they should?

Could you please also post your startups:

Go to Start/run, and type Msinfo32, followed by OK.
Go to Software Environment/Startup Programs.
Click Edit/'Select all', and then 'copy'
Now paste the contents in your post.

Yes it only happens when I try to download, the IT guy at my internet provider said "I can't access the page but thepage is there"

Well, you've got an incredible amount of spy/foistware including a dialer there, so I'm not surprised.

Go to Start > Run, type Msconfig, and uncheck the following items on the Startup tab:

NetZIPFolders, updatemgr.exe, MyCometCursor, sysres, regtmlp, spp, sp, DownloadWare, Hotbar, Movienetworks, sps, and NoCredit Card.

Click OK, close Msconfig, and reboot.

Uninstall Comet Cursor, and DownloadWare, if they're in Control Panel/Software Add/remove.

Now download and install Refupdate Utility (http://www.wyvernworks.com/Lavasoft/aaw.exe>Ad-Aware).
This utility searches for, downloads and automatically installs the latest AAW reffile (the spyware definitions, so to speak).

Run the refupdate.exe installation file, and once installed, go to Start Menu>Programs, find the Lavasoft Refupdate entry and run it.
Click connect; it will open a connection to the internet to check and update the current signature file.

When that's completed open Ad-aware, look at the bottom left corner, it should now say "Signature file in use: "038-16.08.2002".

Then have your drives and registry scanned for spyware, check ALL found files and reg keys, hit 'backup', then click continue, and have them all removed.

Reboot once more.

Good luck, Tony

Additionally, after doing that, locate and find the following files:

C:\Windows\sp.dll
c:\windows\dialer.exe

If one or both are still there, delete them.

Did the first thing you said but still can't download anything.

TonyKlein

Well, all of this badly needs to be done regardless of whether it has any relation to your download problem.

For now, I have no other recommendations other than the ones I've given you, I'm afraid.

Hopefully someone else will come along with some fresh ideas.

Thanks for your help, do you think if I reloaded WIN 98 that may cure it?

TonyKlein
08-17-2002, 11:21 AM
I have my doubts, but why not try it.

If you install it on top of your present version, you won't lose any data.

If you happen to be running IE 6.0, you need to remove that version first, though:

How to Remove Internet Explorer 6.0 or Outlook Express 6.0 Before You Reinstall Windows (Q312474)

Mocha

I would think reinstalling would leave you with all that spyware, unless you reformat.

You should still be able to uninstall and get rid of some of that, whether you can download or not.

Plus, have you tried repairing I.E., by chance? That may be worth a try....can't hurt anything.

TonyKlein

I agree with Carol, and I hope you didn't misunderstand what I meant:

Before installing Win 98 on top of itself, FIRST, all spyware needs to be removed as explained before.

Run Ad-Aware, delete the files, everything.

Mocha

I'm assuming one problem is being unable to download Ad-Aware, so that he can run it? There must be a way to download to another machine, then install on his.

It's not a large app., but I don't recall the size. If the machine that it's downloaded to has a file splitter, it could be put on a couple floppies. You should then be able to follow those instructions, right?

Btw, I was sure that's what you meant, Tony. People do misunderstand very easily it seems. /images/forums/icons/tongue.gif

You're right Carol, I forgot all about the original problem.../images/forums/icons/crazy.gif

Well, if sticb does need Ad-Aware, I can maybe send it as an attachment, if he'd care to send me a PM with his email addie.

Mocha
08-17-2002, 12:24 PM
Yes, but still, he needs to get rid of all that garbage first then worry about the download problem. Otherwise, downloading will be the least of his problems, right?! Is it possible removing the spyware junk would resolve that problem, too?

I just checked, and it's less than 900kb, so one floppy is all it would take, or like you said someone can easily send it as an attachment.

Catch you later,
Carol
