I badly needed to reformat my hard drive, so I backed up all of my word documents, email, files, etc. to a CD-ROM and erased everything. Now I am trying to recreate everything. My problem is this -- when I copy a file (e.g. Microsoft Word document) from the CD-ROM to my hard drive, it makes the "creation date" of the file as today, and does not retain the original "creation date" as it is listed in the properties on the file on the CD-ROM (and as it was on my hard drive originally). Anyone have a way to keep the correct creation date? It probably sounds nitpicky but I the date helps me to categorize my files if I need to.

Also, is there a way to prevent the files from being labeled "read-only" when they are copied from the CD to my hard drive? I am able to fix this by clicking properties and unclicking the check box, but this needs to be done for each file, and it is time consuming.

If it matters, I am using Windows 98 (1st edition, I think).

Thanks in advance for any help.

Sincerely,

Andrew Duker

The file dates in Windows Explorer shouldn't have changed but the folder dates will when copied to CD. And in testing on my Win98SE, a file date did not change when copied from the CD back to the hard drive. The creation date should still be embedded in the file and seen by right-clicking and Properties.

WinXP changed the read-only feature and when files are copied back onto the hard drive, the read-only attribute is cleared. Otherwise, you'll have to do it manually. Select all the files in a folder, right-click and clear the read-only box.

We all, each of us, have a uniqueness, some of us enjoy it, some of us don't.

There must be something different about my computer. In Windows Explorer, I right-click on the file located on the CD drive and the properties state the creation date is Dec 29, 2000 (or whatever the date is). I have tried drag and drop, cutting and pasting, using the "Send to" on right-click, all of these copy the file to my hard drive but make the creation date the current date Aug 15, 2002. The modification date is often much earlier by a couple of years. Anyone have thoughts on other ways to copy the files back from the CD that would somehow save the creation date of the file?
