I did have Windows 2k on my laptop though i formatted the hard drive and put Win ME on cos I was having loads of problems with my Internet. My modem (in the laptop) is hooked up to a telephone line and the computer says that the modem is working correctly. I have tried several leads and phone sockets though i keep getting a load of rubbish about having no dial tone. I do have on these phone lines and when I try to connect to the Internet i get a beep through my speakers which I assume is the computer communicating with the modem before dialling out. This is very confusing as i have removed the modem and reinstalled and i have removed then recreated the Dial Up to the net. Any help would be much appreciated

Do you have the same problems in another location, such as your neighbor or in a computer shop? Could be that the modem has in fact died, even though the Windows diagnostic says it is good. I have changed several in the last month due to a couple of storms. The modems tested good in Windows but no dial tone. One storm even damaged the on-board sound card when it took the modem out.

I have a problem with my modem not dialing at all from Dial pad to internet etc. I get a message back when trying saying Modem is either turned off or not installed properly. When I check in Sytems it states modem is running properly. I removed and rebooted and came back up with same problem. I sent CPU back to HP who says they put new modem in...however, when returned still can not access phone line. Any suggestions?

About the only thing left to check is the polarity of the phone line [reversed wires in the jack], that can cause problems with most modems. Another possibility is too many other devices/phones on the same line, degrades the signal too much.
