I am running WIndows 95 and have a Laserjet 5L. My hard drive is continually active, even when I am not using the PC. A diagnostic program shows that HPWHRC, HPWPSW and HPLJSW are three files responsible for most of the activity. What are these and can they be disabled? I don't want my hard drive wearing out before its time!

phillkiwi,

Does the information in this thread (posted earlier today!) answer your question?

phillkiwi,

I did a search on Google & found several hits for each of the files you referred to. They all appear to be Printer Drivers. In reading some of the articles, I found that bidirectional printer cables were mentioned several times.

Here are the links for:
HPWPSW (http://www.google.com/search?q=HPWHRC>HPWHRC</a>
<a)
<a target="_blank" href=http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=HPLJSW>HPLJSW</a>

Maybe you can find some useful information from one of those articles. Also, someone with much more experience than I will see your question here & may have a better answer for you.

Download <a target="_blank" href=http://www.forrestandassociates.co.uk/pcforrest/startman_v1.html>StartMan</a>

It's an excellent replacement for the Msconfig/startup applet that exists in Windows 98, Me and XP.

You simply uncheck applications you don't want to load as Windows starts.

And it allows you to export the contents to a text file.

Please do that, and post your startups here.

Good luck, Tony
