View Full Version : ALL THESE EXPERTS AND NO REPLIES (W98)

Hi:

I made an earlier post for help on what I thought would be a pretty simple problem, but either the experts don't know or they don't consider this to be worth their time.

On the icon for "volume" (toolbar, lower right) you click on it and then to check the sound level, you click on the "bar" and hear the "bong".

Well, mine doesn't work. I get no "bong" sound but my sound card is fine, everything is playing fine with all other operations requiring sound. It's just that it doesn't work on this test for my level.

I went to MY COMPUTER\CONTROL PANEL\SOUNDS and looked it over, but I can't see what the catagory would be for that sound. I thouht that some how it may have been turned off.

I opened up the menu for the "sound icon", checked all the settings and everything looks fine. Nothing is checked off as closed or muted.

Any suggestions??

Thanks,
ve6tp

Sounds are attached to events by opening the Sounds applet in Control Panel, clicking on the event in the Events box, going to the Sound box and in the Name: list, choosing a .wav file. There is also a Browse button to choose sounds not in the Media folder. The Detail button gives information about the sound file. The sound can be heard by click on the arrow beside the Preview window.

If there is a speaker icon in from on an event, that means a sound has been assigned to that event.

The sounds as customized can be saved as a Scheme or one of the other schemes can be chosen.

When the sounds are set up as desired, clicking the Apply button will save them and the OK button will exit the setup.

If a particular sound doesn't work but a couple others will work, then there may be a problem with the sound file itself.

One last possibility is that a program that came with the sound card installation may have taken over that task.

One other thing that needs to be mentioned, when clicking on the speaker in the System Tray, the button/slide bar has to be moved just a little in order for it to make any noise. All it does is signify that a change has been made. But then the problem couldn't be that simple, or could it?

And as a side note, most of us are not 'experts', we do have some experience and are here trying to help others by sharing what we have learned. Each and every one of us has computer knowledge but none of us 'know it all'. To claim to 'know it all' would be presumptious and egotistical, the computer world changes too much too quickly and there is no way to 'know it all'.

We all, each of us, have a uniqueness, some of us enjoy it, some of us don't.

Ditto on Bert's post!

Go to sounds and click on the Default Sound entry. Assign a sound to that entry.

I created a custom .wav file that I use. it warns my son not to change the sound level/properties or he's grounded for a week.

I think my son now hates pc's or me :)

Hi Bert:

Lets clear up this side issue of "experts" first.

It was not meant as a derogatory remark!! To me, people such as yourself have so much more experience and knowledge than I do, that in my mind, they are an expert. It doesn't mean you know everything. Who does?? It means you have the expertise and my respect. It was, if you read it with an open mind, meant to be a compliment.

However Bert, when I first posted the subject, you were the only one to bother replying and trying to help me out. It didn't solve the problem and nobody else replied. I had to try something to get more response and thus the title. It did get results, right??

So fellas, don't be so thin skinned. I admire the people who spend their time and effort trying to help others. OK?? Now it's water under the bridge as far as I'm concerned. Back to the main subject.

In the Sounds Properties" menu, the name of the window display is "Events", and yes, the events are shown within that wilndow and the sounds can be tested as you said. I am familiar with that Bert. I am asking for the next step. In the "events' window, please tell me the name of the event that identifies with the bar on the "volume icon" for when it is tested. What is it called so that I can select it in the menu and see if there is a file assigned to it?? I don't know what the "event" is called.

No, I realize that it takes a little movement on the bar to make the test sound work :-)))

The only change I have had done fairly recently Bert, is that I had a new CD Burner installed and the old CD player removed. It could be part of the problem I suppose. The new item is a CD-R/W/Play type. But as I explained earlier, everything else is working just fine for all my other needs for sound, only this darn icon test bar doesn't work. So I'm (pretty) sure the problem is not with the sound card.. It's really nothing for me to get excited about, it's just a thorn to me if things don't work 100% when they should.

As POBrien suggested, I did try restoring the settings to the "Default" and the results were the same. No sound for the test.

Any other suggstions Bert??

I appreciate your help, thanks again.

Regards,
ve6tp

As mentioned in my previous post the entry is listed as >>> Default Sound

"In the "events' window, please tell me the name of the event that identifies with the bar on the "volume icon" for when it is tested."

On my WinXP the event is Default Beep and the default sound file is Windows XP Ding.wav.

On my Win98 the event is Default Sound and the file is Windows 98 default sound.wav.

The CD drive shouldn't make a difference, doesn't even need the sound card to operate [haven't seen the sound card/drive packages in a number of years, late 486 to early Pentium days].

We all, each of us, have a uniqueness, some of us enjoy it, some of us don't.

Bert & Pat:

Fellas, I have checked and rechecked everyway I can. You're going to have to trust me on this one.

In the Sound Options menu, under the Events widnow, I DO NOT have and event called "Default Sound". I checked all the events listed, though I suspect this particular one would be under the directory on that menu, listed under "WINDOWS".

Not only that, but I checked my files for the wav. file and looked through the WINDOWS MEDIA directory ... nodda. There is not a .wav file named Windows 98 default sound.wav and not one named default sound.wav or anything like that.

I guess one could always say it must have been deleted then because it should be there, but really, that is highly unlikely I would do that ... But furthermore, if there was such a title in the menu event, how would that get deleted too??

I guess my next question is: Can I place this otion manually into the Events window? Then I could select a sound that would be close to the original??

Thanks again.

ve6tp

ve6tp,

What about System Default under Windows? That's what mine is called in WinMe.

Check out this post. Someone else had a smilar problem where the default sound was lost and it was fixed by installing a new theme. Don't know much about Windows 98 but there may be some similar themes that may restore the default option.

Hi Andy:

Thanks for that link Andy. It's as close to my problem as you can get. Same problem as I am having. But can't get it to initiate. Nothing in the Events window eilther and no "default.wav". Well, as I said earlier, I can live without it. Undoubtibly, some day I wil have a hard drive crash and have to re-install Windows again. That will do it, I'm sure :-)

I tried all the different themes, checked each one out, but none had the entry for the window.

Thanks again for trying Andy.

Hi Nana:

Nope, nothing there, but thanks for the suggestion.

Take care, both of you.

You might try going into Control Panel\Add/Remove Programs\Windows Setup\Multimedia\ and unchecking Multimedia Sound Schemes or Sample Sound \OK then rechecking it \OK. Might recreate Default Sound.

Found this on another forum. Hope it helps. You will have to substitue your missing event.

In response to old post on the Sound Control Panel applet missing particular Sound Events
*********************************************

You can manually add sounds through the registry.

I was missing the New Mail Notification sound event from the Sound control panel. I created the following two keys:
1) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\ MailBeep\.current
2)HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\EventLabels\Mailbeep

I set the value of the second key to "New Mail Notification".

Following a restart the Sound Event was available in the Sound Control Panel and could be set to a .wav accordingly.

[Performed on Windows 2000]Mabe will work on your OS.

Hi Deke:

Going to take you with me to Las Vegas. YOU'RE A WINNER!!!

You lead me to the right path and made the right suggestions Deke. I added one more possibility to what you suggested. In case anyone else in the future has this problem, here is the path Deke suggested: Control Panel\Add/Remove Programs\Windows Setup\Multimedia\ and uncheck Multimedia Sound Schemes (I also unchecked the option below that entitled "Volume Control"), then deleted them both. Then used the same paths, put the check in the two selections, put the Windows'98 installation disk in the CD drive and reinstalled the two options.

I'm not sure which of the two did the job, or if it required both of them, but the selection that had disappeared earlier was back in the "Events" wilndow as "default sound" and I just selected a .wav file for it and presto .... worked like a charm.

GREAT WORK DEKE. Thank you so much.

And to all the rest of you. I owe you a lot of thanks for your time and effort put in on this problem. Sorry to have used this method to get responces and hope you have forgiven me by now as it was not personal and I explained all that in the above post. You are a great bunch.

Best regards,
