I've got over 1000 ".IDX" files in my root directory on C drive. They are sequentual in name, starting "CA00.IDX" to "STUC.IDX" in what seems to be Hexadecimal numbering. They were all created at the same time, and are 32 bytes in size. This file type is not registered to any application. If I open them in Notepad they have one line which reads as follows:

TIDX è

That's the same in every file.

What are these and are they safe to delete??

.IDX Index (multiple programs)

" If I open them in Notepad they have one line which reads as follows:

TIDX è "

That line in Notepad is all you will be able to see, the rest is machine or programming language.

You might look at the dates and see if any jibe with activities that may have taken place on the dates. You could also move them into a new folder called Index and see if any problems occur. If not, about 30 days later, delete them. If more show up in the same place, look for a program or virus that may be causing it.

Certainly, this was indeed my plan of attack. I was wanting to throw this before others to see if maybe there was any easy answer.

Many thanks for your attentive response
