How to I get rid of those startup programs in taskbar?
Whenever, I install certain applications, they will appear in the startup task bar whenever Windows Xp first load up.
What is the path in the directory where I can delete the entry to prevent the programs from starting up when windows is loading?

The easiest method is to always go to Start and Run, then type msconfig. Move to the startup tab. Anything that is checked, are those programs that load when Windows loads. Uncheck those that aren't needed.

So how do I get rid of MS messenger?
It is very irritating and keep on appearing in the task bar prompting users to sign up and be a member?

If you're on the Startup tab in msconfig, its msmsgs. Otherwise, use the registry trick Simon has listed at <font color=blue>WinGuides Driver Guide</font color=blue> (http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/981/>http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/981/</a>

Using msconfig will only stop the messenger from starting automatically when windows starts.
I look at the http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/981 on how to diable MSN Messenger but I cannot find the two keys:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Mess enger\Client]
and
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Mes senger\Client]
This is after I disable MSN Messenger in MSConfig.
Why?

Interesting, I've never tried to apply this tweak myself (I don’t have a problem with Messenger), but you're right. For some reason I don’t have those keys either. Anyone else have any input on this?

Well, I messaged Simon to see if he could shed some light on things for us here. Thanks for checking Nana and Bert. /images/forums/icons/smile.gif

Thanks 7ate9 -- if the keys do not already exist then they must be created manually (Edit > New > Key). Or you can use <a target="_blank" href=http://www.winguides.com/tweak/>Tweak Manager</a> and it will do it for you! /images/forums/icons/smile.gif

Simon,
Thank you, Simon. I hadn't looked in Tweak Manager, which I do have. I should have gone there first. It's a great programme and has almost any tweak one can think of.

Thanks Simon! That's what I had thought, but wasn't 100% sure, so didn't wanna lead anyone the wrong way.
