View Full Version : Need Default Monitor Help/Hack (W2K)

I have a Dell Monitor attached to a W2KP desktop through a Belkin OmniCube 4-port KVM. If the monitor is attached directly to the PC, it's recognized, and it shows up in the Display Properties/Settings. If, however, I hook it up thru the Belkin, W2K reverts to Default, grays out the Properties Box, and won't let me change anything. I've looked into the registry, and the device entries for the monitor are still there with the Device ID loaded from the drivers ****, but they don't get activated.
Is there a registry hack that would allow the Dell monitor registry keys to be used all the time?
Thanks

What I see as a possible problem is that the KVM switch is causing a signal loss between the computer and monitor. Your own diagnosis bears that out.
When Win2K can't properly communicate with a peripheral, it does tend to go with the defaults and not allow any adjustments. Do you also have an extension data cable on the monitor? Does it help to install/re-install the software that came with the monitor?
I use a LinkSys 2-port PS/2 KVM with no problems but only have 4 ft. cables.

Make sure that the cables you are using have pin 9 connected. Pin 9 is the DDC line and is required for the OS to identify the monitor.

Thanks guys. I hooked one extension cable directly to the monitor cable, and the problem was still there. It appears that the monitor cable, and the extender cables are mismatched. I assume that the Monitor is VGA, and the others are SVGA. Since pin 9 isn't used in the SVGA pinouts, it appears that I need to pull some connectors apart and see what's going on.

You're welcome. Sometimes a person can be too close to the problem and become frustrated.
If you can find one, you might want an extension cable with "all pins wired", not every company stocks them.

There is no joy :(
The monitor connector is
01) o o o x o (05
10) o o o o o (06
11) x o o o o (15
The Extension cables are:
01) o o o o o (05
10) o x o o o (06
11) o o o o o (15
Guess I could build a patch cable that bridged Monitor Pin 9 to Pin 11 of the Belkin. That should get ID bit 0 through to the PC's, I think.

Don't bridge anything. My mistake earlier, pin 9 is the +5V and you don't want to connect that to any of your signal pins.
You really need to get a straight through connector.
