I have W98 Full Version. All the hardware is working fine. Except the 30G. The 30G is in 2 Partitions C & D. When I boot up the PC it will show me the startup information. It even shows the W98 logo and then will go and check again and show the W98 logo for the second time(like Normal). Here is where the problem starts: It will then go back to a DOS and the following appears:
Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run windows or a windows application. The window registy or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using it's uninstall or setup program. If you still want to use the application assoicated with the device file, try reinstalling the application to replace the missing file.
D:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\vrtwd.386 (Press key to continue) I press key and..
D:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\vfixd.vxd (Press key to continue) I press key and..it says:
"It's now safe to shutdown your computer"
I have tried different HDD's on this PC & put the 30G on another PC with same results. So we know all other HDWare is working fine including the CD ROM. (I don't want you to be confused that it is looking for the CD ROM.) I have checked the Bios to make sure of the boot sequence all is fine in the Bios
NOTE: where it says D:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM it should be C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. There is no windows installed on the D: because there is no D: drive. There is only one master HDD.
I am thinking that something needs to be set in the registry but do not know how to get to the registry in DOS and somehow get it to point back to C: where windows is setting instead of D:. It does not go to "Safe Mode" as after it sees the second W98 log it goes directly to DOS and gives the above message. Note: It does the same thing when attached to a different PC.
We have not deleted anything or installed or uninstalled any applications before this happened.
We have replaced the files that windows says it's missing. As you can clearly see as noted above it keeps pointing to D:\ rather than C:\.
Can you help?
