Have you ever noticed how on certain laptops when you first bootup, you have to press shift+numlock in order to be able to type the U,I,O,P,J,K,L,;,:,M,<,> characters? Is there a way
to disable this on the registry so that you don't have to press this key combination every time it boots up? Please advise. Thanks! =)

On mine that is part of the BIOS setup. If NumLock is on, the numeric keys are activated. The shift+numlock combination temporarily turns the feature off. On mine the only way to make the keyboard letters normal is to set the BIOS to disable the Keyboard NumLock at bootup.

That's a great tip I had to use with my NT4 Server machine several years back but it was a desktop with the separate number pad on the keyboard.

Good point Bert. I didn't even think about the keypad.

Notebooks are in a world of their own sometimes.

You said it. Speaking of notebooks. I spilled coffee on mine (right on the keyboard) about 6 months ago. After it dried out the enter key and a few other keys no longer work. I haven't called a tech shop yet so I thought I'd ask you. Is there any way to replace just the entire keyboard section itself or is it a lost cause?
Thanks,
Pat

I don't know about cost but the keyboard unit is replaceable on most notebooks. There's screws on the bottom that will allow you to remove it and once the keyboard is released and lifted gently, you'll see 2 [usually] flat data ribbons that connect the keys and the touchpad to the motherboard. Sometimes the shroud around the keyboard also has to come off.

Got it. Thanks alot Bert. After I get this replaced I think I'll buy one of those plastic protective coverings. I know that would have saved it.
