I am unable to browse while connected to the internet either DSL or dial-up. I have reinstalled WinME, and my DSL software & hardware. Along with reinstalling TCP/IP communications. Can Ping # but not WWW. Niether IE or Netscape work. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Launch Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Go to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced tab, and click Restore Defaults.
Go to the Security tab, click 'Internet', and hit 'restore defaults' there as well.

Now go to Tools/Internet Options/Connections tab.

Is 'Never Dial a connection' selected? If so, change that to 'Always dial my default connection', and confirm by clicking 'OK'.

In the Dial-up settings area, select your ISP's connection so that it is highlighted, and then choose the Settings button.
Ensure that the Automatically detect settings, Use automatic configuration script, and Use a proxy server options are not selected, unless you're actually using a proxy, of course.
Choose the OK button.

Press the LAN Settings button, and do likewise.

Next, select the Advanced tab, and press 'default settings', then click OK.

Now attempt to connect.

If no joy, read these articles:

I had the same problem before, but I found out one thing that was really tricky. Maybe you should start looking at that as the possbilities of not being able to browse.

When you said you can't browse, obviously it is because the internet is down. That is the clue.

You say you can ping. What did you ping?

Try all this when you ping.

Ping your own address,
Ping DNS

Still got reply?

Now Ping DHCP server address.

Last time I had problem with my internet browser, I thought there is browser problem. I went on pinging everything. I found out the DHCP server is down. meaning, My ip address remains because of the info saved in the system. I bet if you release your ip. and renew, you will fail. That could mean that your ISP has problem with the DHCP server.

Try that and hope that helps.

Thanks guys, actually I tried a both and found that my registry had become corrupt. Winsock.dll and wsock32.dll. Unfortunately I'm not very good with registry issues, so I went ahead and reformated my boot up hard drive. Luckily I have two drives so i didn't lose anything. Once I reinstalled WinME and my DSL software, it worked. :) Probably not that best solution but it worked. Thanks again for your advice.
