This problem installed after installing linux in a dual boot scenario.

My problem begins with the update lilo made to my dos mbr (installed linux
on slave, dos on master). Upon installing linux and rebooting to go into
win98, I got a message from my virus software (vp rule) indicating a
mismatch in the windows registry. I opted to replace the current with a
backup. Thats where everything went haywire. :-(

I then rebooted the machine and received a message: "non system disk,
replace it or else blah blah blah..." At that point I couldn't access
either drive. I then obtained my 98 rescue disk and rebooted. Upon
rebooting, I performed the "sys" command off the 98 rescue disk to copy over
new mbr files. I then rebooted the system and was dropped into "command
prompt only" only mode and was instructed to run "scanreg". I ran scanreg
and it ****** died. I reran several times and it just dies without doing
anything. Not good...

So I then ran scanddisk and I came up with some sort of lba message. BTW, I
know the hd is set up properly as I've used it many times prior to this
installation. The lba message indicated something about double checking the
bios to make sure the hd was configured properly. It is. I then began
running the scandisk check and it came up with multiple errors... I ended up
just killing it before it completed because it kept prompting me to fix bad
clusters...way too many.

Anyway, at the end of the day, theres seems to be some issue with the
windows registry and I really don't know what to do short of salvaging what
personal files I can via dos and resinstalling windows... :-( I'll tell
you though, this is not what I planned on doing when I set out to install
Caldera. Funny thing is the Caldera installation went fine. The change to
the mbr and the subsequent replacement by my virus program really screwed
things up though.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated...

dude as much time as your spending on this, just fdisk the *******s buy yourself a multi-system/partition manager and do it right. You have a nice menu to boot to your OS also backs up MBR (better than windows) can move free space to/from disk to disk and partition to partition. fat 16 to 32 and back to 16 again etc.etc.etc. Checkout Partition Manager. Put it this way you'll be an ace at installing Linux.

i agree with anonomous. the best program i have found is partiotion magic. it is very good at fixing and repartiotioning hard drives without any errors at all. just make sure you do it when you know there will not be a power outage or storm unless you have backup power. i would also suggest making a backup of all data on the drive befor trying any steps to fixing this problem. hope you get through this problem. post to this message for any other help. goodluck, mayton82
