I at times I get a strange problems on certain sites, that IE 6 will not let me save a jpeg or jpg, It only shows "untitled Bmp" as a option. For sure that image is a jpg. Neither the image toolbar shows on the image when I move the cursor on the image.

I read somewhere on this forum that deleting temp files might solve the problem but it does'nt.
Is it a bug in IE6, any solutions for this?

A pssibility:

Internet Explorer Does Not Save Graphics Files in the Proper Format if Username:Password Is Part of the URL

---------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5 for Windows 95
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5 for Windows 98
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5 for Windows 98 Second Edition
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5 for Windows NT 4.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5 for Windows 2000
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 for Windows 2000
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 for Windows 98
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 for Windows 98 Second Edition
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 for Windows Millennium Edition
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 for Windows NT 4.0
-------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
When you use the Save Picture As option for a graphics file in Microsoft Internet Explorer, you are only allowed to save the file as a BMP file, even if the file is in another format, for example, GIF or JPEG. The file name may also appear as 'Untitled'.

CAUSE
There are several reasons why this issue may occur.

This issue may occur if your Temporary Internet pages cache is full.

This issue can occur if you have "Do not save encrypted pages to disk" selected in Tools, Options, Advanced Tab and are loading the page over a secure connection (https).

This issue can occur when you connect to a Web site using an address that contains <username:password>. For example, the server is accessed through http://<username:password@site>/default.htm, instead of
http://<site>/default.htm.

Please see the following KB article for information on an additional cause:

<a target="_blank" href=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q250747Q250747>Right-Clicking, Selecting 'Save Picture As' Does Not Save Image with Correct Extension</a>

WORKAROUND
You can use any one of three methods to work around this issue.

Workaround for Cause 1
To resolve, delete the temporary internet files by selecting Tools, Options, General tab and select the Delete Files button.
Workaround for Cause 2
To workaround, uncheck "Do not save encrypted pages to disk" from Tools, Options, Advanced Tab. Then select View, Refresh to reload the page.

Workaround for Cause 3
Method 1
Open the Temporary Internet Files directory and locate the image that you attempted to save.

Right click the image and click Open.

When the image loads into Internet Explorer, right click the image and click Save Picture As. The correct file type and name should be correct.

Method 2
Type in the direct path to the image that you wish to save.

When the image loads into Internet Explorer, right click the image and select Save Picture As. The correct file type and name should be correct.

Method 3
You can also save the file in BMP format, and then covert the file to the desired file format using a graphics editor.

I have tried every fix listed and none seem to work consistently...which is very annoying. The first time I emptied the cache, some pictures that I tried to save earlier that wouldn't did. Then I went back later as a test and they would not open. I have a new laptop and do not wish to install a mass amount of programs, hence I do not need any more graphics software! I was under the impression that Paint and Windows Picture/Fax viewer would be sufficient for just saving pictures on webpages now and then but I cannot save anything that will reopen. This is very frustrating.

I don't know what service you use, but someone finally told me to go to CS's Help forum and post since as having CompuServe, I don't really use IE as my main browser. Help there said to go to the web preferences there and make sure 'Do Not' or 'Never' compress graphics is checked. AND IT WORKED! Finally. I am so happy. I've saved tons of pics I wasn't able to previously save as .jpeg. So go check your preferences for whatever service you have and see if there's something similar. Mine originally had the box checked that said to 'only compress graphics if...' and soon as I checked the 'never' box, it worked like a charm.

Hope this helps someone else because I was pulling my hair out!
