Hi Nana,
Happy Canada Day!
I had no idea what Canada Day was so I had a look. For those of you, like me, who don't know here is some background info:

paul38,
Thank you for the birthday wishes. I guess the whole world knows what July 4th is, but our country - parked to the north & bigger than our southern neighbours - of only 33 million people celebrate our beginnings, too.
Today is our 135th birthday!

I must admit i've never actually heard of Canada day, i'd say most of us in the UK havent /images/forums/icons/crazy.gif
The link paul supplied makes interesting reading.
DanK,
I'm really surprised /images/forums/icons/shocked.gif that people in the UK don't know about Canada Day. After all, we are still part of the Commonwealth.
Mind you, I have no idea if the UK celebrates a birthday - other than the Queen's, which we celebrate as well (Victoria Day, May 24). - so I shouldn't be surprised that the people in the UK don't know ours.
It's a shame that we learn so little about one another's countries in school. /images/forums/icons/frown.gif Although, that shouldn't stop us learning more as adults.
Time for me to do some reading. . . .

Most special occasions in the UK, St Georges day etc arn't holidays anymore /images/forums/icons/frown.gif hope Canada still have this little luxury.
DanK,
Sorry, I hate to admit that I didn't know when (April 23rd) or what St. Georges Day is. Now I do!
To answer your question, yes, both Victoria Day and Canada Day are still holidays. We celebrate Victoria Day on the closest Monday before or on the 24th of May. It (usually) falls the weekend before the American Memorial Day weekend.
Canada Day is supposed to be celebrated on July 1st. . . BUT, when it falls mid week, the actual day off is being moved, by a minority of businesses so far, to either the Friday or the Monday closest to the first.
That's great as far as summer long weekends go, but what 'inconvient' holiday will be moved next? Christmas?

"I guess the whole world knows what July 4th is"
We had to get ours the hard way.
Bert,
"We had to get ours the hard way."
Don't you know that we Canadians are lovers not fighters?

I'd heard that but have had the misfortune over time of not being able to experience it first-hand.
Drive north!
