Ok, I was installing a trail version of a Cakewalk recording program named Guitar Tracks 2. The installation got to the very end and then a window popped up saying that it could not find a Windows program named "regedit" and it needed that program for it to work so that installation failed. Someone please tell me what regedit is and help me get it back! I tried the trail version before on another computer and it worked fine. Help me.........

Artie734,

The programme regedit.exe is the access point to the Windows Registry - the backbone of your OS. It is likely located in C:\Windows. I am only telling you what regedit.exe is.

Don't do anything with or to regedit.exe until you get a complete answer from a more learned person here. Playing around with it can make your whole system inoperable!

Here is a good starting point for the registry:

Windows Registry Tutorial</font color=blue> (http://www.winguides.com/registry/article.php?id=1><font)
Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry</font color=blue> (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q256986><font)

Hope these help,

You can download regedit.exe from here</font color=blue> (http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~flibble/regsmall.html><font).

Read the warnings and take note of Nana's advice.

If regedit is missing then I would recommend a virus scan of the system.

I just did a full system scan and no viruses showed up.

Do a search on your hard drive for regedit.exe. As Nana posted it should be in the C:\windows directory. If you find it in any folder other than C:\windows then copy it to C:\windows. If it is not found then download it from the link provided by Paul and store it in C:\windows.

Cheers
