The only way I have seen it done was to copy all the desktop icons to the Quick Launch bar, then when clicking the double arrow, a list pops up. But then maybe that's why MS put the Desktop icon there, so we can minimize everything to get to the desktop.

Right click on the Taskbar, wave over Toolbars and then select Desktop.
Then place your cursor over the left end of the new toolbar and drag it all the way to the right.

You will then see the vertical >> double arrows that you can double click to display the toolbar's contents.

Right click on your bare desktop and select New>Folder and give it a name such as Desktop.

Left click on the top left icon once on your desktop to select or highlight it (Mine is My Computer), then hold down the Shift key and left click once on the bottom right desktop icon to select all desktop icons.
Then hold down the Ctrl key and left click on your new folder once to deselect it.

Then right click on any highlighted desktop icon and drag it to the new folder. Release the mouse button and select Create Shortcut(s) here.

You will now have a shortcut to all desktop items in the new folder.

Right click on the Start button and select Explore.

Then right click and drag that new desktop folder into your explorer window and into the position you want.
If you place it in the Start folder area then it will appear in the Start menu above the divider above Programs.
If you drag it on top of the Programs folder then your folder will appear within the Programs cascading or scrolling menu.
Release the mouse button and select Move Here.

Hope this is what you are looking for.

Or if you're really good at remembering shortcuts you can hit the flying windows key on your keyboard (located generally between Ctrl and Alt) and the "D" key and this will take you to the desktop, even if your in an application
