When running a thorough Scandisk is there a way to not receive the "Scandisk has restarted 10 times...Do you want to continue receiving this warning?" window? You have to answer it before scandisk will continue and we prefer to run scandisk at night after going home when no one is around to answer the question.
Thanks.

Leenie:

You have the very common problem of having programs and/or a screensaver running in the background while Scandisk and/or Disk Defragmenter is trying to run. This interferes with the process and causes it to restart or abort.

Read my article, "Hard Drive Maintenance", which will explain in easy-to-understand details how to properly run them.

Leenie,

Isn't that one of the most annoying questions on this wee planet of ours? /images/forums/icons/crazy.gif
I don't know if there is, but there should be some way to disable that question.

In order to get the disk scanned without that happening, try these suggestions for running Scan Disk:

<a target="_blank" href=http://www.winguides.com/forums/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=genwin&Number=45682&page=&view=&sb=>http://www.winguides.com/forums/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=genwin&Number=45682&page=&view=&sb=</a>

They worked for me. I always run both Scan Disk & Disk Defragmenter in Safe Mode now. Good luck.

EDIT: Looks like CaptainSpeleo already answered your question while I was busy typing my own response. He's given you much more complete instructions than I.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by Nana on 06/26/02 14:33.</FONT></P>

So there's no setting I can change where it won't even ask that question? I'm dealing with fairly computer illiterate people here and if I give them too many steps they won't even bother to run scandisk.
Thanks.

Leenie,

I don't know if there is any way to get rid of that question. Maybe someone else can answer that for you.

In the meantime, when your staff leave at the end of the day, do they usually turn their computers off? If so, it's easy for them to put their computer into Safe Mode instead of shutting the computer off. They can then run ScanDisk and/or Disk Defragmenter from there.

Here are the instructions to run ScanDisk this way, taken form the link to <font color=red>"Frank's Windows 95/98 Tips"</font color=red> that CaptainSpeleo provided earlier in this thread.

<font color=red>"Completely shut down and restart, or reboot your computer. Start tapping the F8 key about once a second until the black screen appears. Select the safe mode option, then press Enter.
Once Windows loads in safe mode, the resolution will be lower and make everything look large, the color palette will be lower and make everything look washed out, and the words "Safe Mode" will be on all 4 corners of the screen.
Access and run Scandisk and/or Disk Defragmenter, just like you would in a normal Windows environment.
Once they are finished, reboot your computer. It will restart and load Windows in its previous appearance."</font color=red>

I'm sorry, I can't give you any more help than that.

I've thought of that myself, but I back up the pc's from the server at night and in safemode that's not possible. Oh well. Unless I can figure something else out, for now, I've just told them to wait until they get that message before going home for the night.
Thanks anyway.

Leenie,

Are your staff turning off virus programmes and screensavers before they start ScanDisk? The link that Captain Speleo gave you suggests other programmes that should be shut down as well.

I realize you're working with a staff that doesn't want/need 100 things to do just before they leave at night, so you may not get the compliance you would need from them anyway.

Sorry I couldn't be of any help. I'm out of ideas, but check back because someone else may be able to assist you.
