l've downloaded Microsoft RegClean and EasyCleaner from the download section. Can anyone recommend one or the other before l install any of them. OS is WINME. Also does WINME defrag, defrag the registry.

Both are OK, and do different things: they complement each other, so it won't hurt to install both.
Personally, I find Jouni Vuorio's <a target="_blank" href=http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/powertools.shtml>JV16 Power Tools</a> slightly superior to EasyCleaner.
To "defragment", remove empty space, or optimize the registry, you can boot into MS-DOS with a boot disk, and run the Scanreg /fix, and Scanreg /opt commands on occasion.
Incidentally, the Windows Registry Checker (scanreg.exe) will defragment the registry automatically if it detects more than half a megabyte of empty space.

Thanks for the reply. l was going to install Regcompact from the download list but there doesn't seem any point.

I have never used Regcompact myself, but the idea of having to pay $15 just to compact your registry sounds a little rich...
