Hi all,
I've been trying to figure out why I keep selecting my CD-RW control utilty icon to show in the task bar but it's never there when I restart my Pc. I have to keep selecting it from it's program folder, which then causes it to display in the task bar!

This is quite frustrating since I can't eject the cd from this drive without this utility!

I started looking at my registry and discovered that I have several "run" keys under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\

The keys are:

Run
Run-
Run_Disabled
RunOnce
RunOnceEx
RunServices
RunServices-
RunServices_Disabled
RunServicesOnce

I found the string I was looking for under the "Run-" key.

All of these keys are listed just as I entered them here.

Now,
1) Why are there so many "Run" keys?
2) What does the "-" after some of the keys signify?
3) What else is going on here because it seems like a hell of a lot of Run keys?

I'm not brave enough to add or change keys, strings or values without prior instruction so, I did not add or change any of these keys!

I have a P3, 450, Windows 98SE

Not only that: you'll find a couple of those in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion as well.
These pertain to the current user, while those in HKLM are for all users.

Here are a couple of articles:

<a target="_blank" href=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;NL;q179365>INFO: Run, RunOnce, RunServices, RunServicesOnce and Startup (Q179365)</a>

<a target="_blank" href=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q137367>Definition of the RunOnce Keys in the Registry (Q137367)</a>

The Run- and RunServices- keys contain applications that have been disabled from startup, for example by unchecking them in Msconfig/Startup, or through the options of the apllication itself.

As for Run Disabled/RunServices disabled, these keys are comparable to Run-/RunServices-, and they are usually created by third party Startup Managers like Startup Control Panel or Startup Cop.

Cheers, Tony

Have you went to your Quick Launch folder, after it is on your taskbar, to see if it is there. Windows Explorer\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch-If it isn't there just drag and drop into this folder.

I was so preoccupied with your Registry questions, that I forgot all about the original issue.../images/forums/icons/laugh.gif

There must be an check box somewhere within the options of the program itself to make it load at Startup.

Are you certain you've checked everything?

You probably know this but, I meant drag a shortcut to the quick launch folder.

Hi Tony,
Yes, I have checked the apps options and the option to show an icon in the sys tray is checked.

Some time ago I installed System Mechanic (by Iolo) and within it was a section to remove or disable startup items. I never disabled this particular reference because as I said, I need it.
Now I find that it's not listed among all the other references that are not disabled as well as all I did disable. (which still show in the listing)

Im wondering if I can just create the string in the other Run key so I can have my utility in the sys tray after I boot up!

What do you think?

I think it may be best to uninstall your CD-Writer software, and subsequently reinstall it.

Don't forget to reboot.

It will probably install the System Tray icon by default.
