messed up regedit exefile need to change to "%1" % (WXP)

i accidentally changed the key in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\classes\exefile\shell\ open\command when i was told it would get rid of a virus. i know that it has to be "%1" %* but it won't let me run any exe files so i can't fix it. I made the fatal mistake of not backing up the registry. please help me find a solution short of reinstalling the OS.

Courtesy of reghakr and PObrien. You may want to try renaming regedit.exe to regedit.com and running it. You can then correct the problem in the registry.
